Jamieson Legh shines for Cougars in Mustangs Invite

Series: Niwot Girls Swim and Dive | Story 16

With star swimmer Mary Codevilla out for the weekend, it was Jamieson Legh’s turn to take charge for the Niwot girls swim team.

The junior dominated in a pair of individual races to help the Cougars finish second in 4A at the Mustang Invitational, which concluded on Jan. 8 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton. Niwot also finished fourth overall behind Broomfield, Legacy and meet-winner Regis Jesuit.

The Cougars would have been well outside the top-five if it weren’t for Legh. In the 100-yard butterfly, Legh took first place and was the only swimmer to finish the race in under one minute (58.75). She also took second place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.01. Legh’s two individual races accounted for 45 of Niwot’s 248 total points on the day.

“Jamieson had an all-star day and that's what we expect from her, and that's what she expects from herself,” said head coach Kyle Bachrodt. “What's impressive about her is that she's incredibly talented and incredibly determined, but is one of the nicest and happiest, most positive people you'll ever meet.”

Legh, alongside sophomore Charlotte Heuer, junior Rowan Lavigne and junior Steph Mow, comprised a Niwot relay team that also swam well in a pair of races. The quartet finished third in the 200-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard medley.

Another Cougar that made waves was junior Julianna Strope. Her best individual race came in the 100-yard breastroke when she finished fifth (1:10.55). “She continues to go out and push herself,” Bachrodt said.

Both Heuer and Mow also placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle, respectively.

What impressed Bachrodt the most, however, was how successful Niwot was despite having a low number of swimmers and subsequently, fewer opportunities to score points. For comparison, Bachrodt said Niwot had 41 swims (or entries in events) while Regis Jesuit had over 120 and Broomfield tallied about 70.

“I was incredibly proud, especially considering that we had a very low number of girls that were able to come out for this week,” Bachrodt said. “The quality of our swims is really what stood out to me.”

Niwot’s numbers may be tested again soon with a busy upcoming schedule. The Cougars will challenge Thompson Valley on Jan. 13 and Boulder on Jan. 14. The Cougars will then swim in the All St. Vrain City Meet on Jan. 15. Bachrodt said he plans on splitting his team up between the back-to-back-to-back meets.

“If we can walk away with two or three wins, I think that is a big win,” Bachrodt said. “We're going to break it up and try to build our most competitive lineups for all three. I am confident that we can go in and win all three of those meets, but we'll see how it goes.”
