Niwot dominates at 2021 Boulder County Championships

Series: Niwot track and field | Story 3

Not even the hottest temperatures of the year could keep the Niwot track and field team from yet another record-breaking* performance, this time at the 44th annual Boulder County Championships, held June 5 at Everly-Montgomery Field in Longmont. Under an unrelenting sun, the Cougars set a total of six new meet records*, set several new top times in Class 4A, and claimed both the boys and girls 2021 team titles with room to spare. Afterwards, Niwot senior Taylor James, sophomore Kimora Northrup and junior Zane Bergen were named the meet MVAs (Most Valuable Athletes).

With just two weekends until the state track and field championships (June 24-26), the Niwot girls are firmly in the Class 4A driver's seat, with the fastest times in all races except the 100m. Three of those times are held by senior Taylor James, in the 200-, 400-, and 800 meter events, and she is second in Class 4A in the 100m.

The road is a little tougher for the Niwot boys, until it comes to the mid- and distance events. Junior Zane Bergen holds the top Class 4A times in the 800m and 1600m, with his teammates Simon Saia, Grayden Rauba, and Joaquin Herrera close behind. The Cougars also have the fastest 4x400m and 4x800 relay times.

Up next for Niwot Stutler Twilight Invitational at Cherry Creek High School on June 12, followed by the St. Vrain Invitational at Everly Montgomery on June 18.
