Flagstaff Academy launches a Dragon digital art gallery

Series: Flagstaff Academy | Story 2

Flagstaff Academy's Elementary and Middle School Visual Arts program is an important component of the K-8th grade public charter school's Core Knowledge Curriculum and one that also provides much joy and inspiration. Now the larger community can enjoy the beautiful artwork Flagstaff Academy students, known as Dragons, have created during this unprecedented school year.

In a year when school was online, in-person, and hybrid, one might think art-making might not be a priority and would slow down, or stop altogether. However, Flagstaff Academy's art team of Ms. Aeravi Link, elementary school art teacher, and Ms. Laura Costa, middle school art teacher, turned the challenge of teaching art during COVID into the school's first interactive online art experience, the Dragon Digital Art Gallery. The exhibit showcases students' work for the entire 2020-21 school year, from clay bobbleheads to mask-making to digital animation, photography, studio art, and so much more.

"Art education has always been a critical part of our programming as it brings depth and meaning to the topics covered in our history and literacy classes, yet it is so much more than that," Gael Lester, Flagstaff Academy K-2 Principal, said. "Participating in the arts fosters creativity, which is a key piece of innovation, and provides opportunities for self-expression, critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. In this time of social distancing, Flagstaff Academy's arts program has provided a genuine point of human connection for students and their families, brought some much needed positivity into our lives, provided a therapeutic outlet, and been a source of comfort and joy."

This special exhibit is hosted on Flagstaff Academy's website.
