All Local, All The Time

Niwot boys soccer coach Stephen Dimit turns to podcasting in free time

Series: Niwot boys soccer | Story 6

A world put on pause can be a difficult time for some, but for Niwot High School head boys soccer coach Stephen Dimit, the absence of spring sports only means new possibilities. His new podcast, “Make Your Mindset,” aims to mentor high school athletes during their time off the field.

His first episode dropped March 31 and featured Oregon State University men’s soccer player Joel Walker. Dimit plans on releasing weekly episodes with guests ranging from college athletes to coaches and local sports-minded friends.

“A lot of the people that we’re calling up out of the blue to reconnect with, and it turns out there’s a lot of people who would love to share their wisdom and their experience,” Dimit said.

“This is a long time for athletes to be away from sports and I got to thinking about ways we can continue to teach them some of the things about sports without them being on the field,” Dimit said. “There’s not many, but I designed the podcast to talk to people with some experience and to give them some tips on how to tackle the mental side of the game during this time.”

“Make Your Mindset” can be found on the music streaming service, Spotify. With youth attention spans slowly dwindling, the first episode was an easily digestible 25-minutes. Dimit wanted to make the podcast “short and meaningful and in a place where they’re already spending their time right now.”

While the episodes are short, they are still packed with valuable lessons for athletes. Dimit hopes to provide a sense of inspiration during a tough time in our country.

“I wanted to teach something about competition and I want it to be something inspiring and motivating because I think everyone is looking for that during this time,” Dimit said. “For a lot of athletes, this is going to be a few months to remember here.”

Dimit recently wrapped up his third season coaching boys soccer at Niwot with his seniors being fortunate enough to experience the entire season. But for many spring-sport seniors, they may never see the field again. Dimit believes it’s important to honor them all the same.

“Seniors are missing out on so much right now and that’s just stuff they don’t get back,” Dimit said. “I feel like it’s up to us to support them and celebrate them during this time.”

Athletes of any age are getting more antsy by the minute and Dimit hopes his podcast can provide an outlet to keep them mentally sharp.

“I think athletes are looking for ways to be ready and that’s what it’s designed to do.”
