Niwot snaps winless streak with rout of Greeley Central

The Niwot girls soccer team hasn’t had much to celebrate this season, so the Cougars’ 10-0 blowout over Greeley Central on April 18 was a much needed respite from this season’s dreary routine.

“It was a good game to get the confidence back,” head coach Stephen Dimit said after the win, just their second in 2019. “The finishing was really good today. We actually finished some proper, nice goals today.”

More than just “some.” In fact, six players scored on the day, and three had multiple goals, including Kiera Flanagan with a trio. She also had an assist, for a team-leading seven points on the day. Maddie Borncamp and Autumn Carlston each had a pair of goals and an assist for five points apiece.

Sophomore Maddie Borncamp (10) had two goals against the visiting Greeley Central Wildcats on April 18.

“We had a really good game of possession and we were finding those through balls, which was really effective for us,” forward Grace Knight said of Niwot’s offensive effort. The senior had a goal and an assist against the Wildcats, and now has 14 points on the year, the team’s second highest total. “We had a lot of speed up there too.”

Unfortunately, the win didn’t do much for Niwot’s postseason aspirations, but it does give the Cougars a chance of finishing with a winning record in the Northern League. Dimit also said it will help to ease the final weeks of what has been a grueling season.

“We’ve hung with some very, very good teams, and just lost by one goal to a lot of teams that are going to be in the playoffs. But we’re learning and progressing and getting better every day.”
