Having just completed Margaret Coel’s “Chief Left Hand,” it seems those visiting the sculptures and historical markers may infer, incorrectly, that the photograph displayed is Chief Niwot. However, this is his cousin, “No-Ta-Nee” a less prominent Southern Arapaho Bosse. (Photograph UC library Western History Collection, Page 226-e of Coel’s book).
Chief Left Hand’s brother, Neva is pictured as the ranking Southern Arapaho present. There are no known photographs of The Great Chief Niwot — perhaps was his plan as many Chiefs and warriors before and after did due to their beliefs against the practice.
