Fire causes Colterra to close for repairs

Mountain View Fire and Rescue received a call at 2:32 a.m. last Wednesday of a commercial fire alarm on the 200 block of Franklin Street in Niwot.

By the time the fire was extenguished, extensive damage had been done to Colterra Food & Wine.

Owner Bradford Heap placed the following statement on the eatery’s website and social media pages.

“Dear Friends,

“Colterra is closed until further notice due to a fire. We will keep you posted on our efforts towards re-opening.

“We would like to thank the Mountain View Fire Department for responding so quickly and doing a great job putting the fire out. Our fire departments are made up of brave and courageous men and women.

“We’re very thankful no one was in the building and no one was hurt.

“While the damage was extensive we look forward to the next chapter for Colterra.

“Please stay tuned and thank you for being our friends.”

The alarm came into the Boulder County Sheriff’s communications, who alerted local firefighters.

Niwot Fire Chief David Beebe said the fire appeared to have started in the kitchen, but as of press time an official cause had not been released.

“It’s still in process,” Beebe said. “It can take awhile depending on the complexity. If we don’t have a clear-cut cause if it has to go to the lab. I don’t know that this one is that complicated, we’re hoping to have something out soon.”

Mountain View’s official statement the following morning signals that there was significant damage to the kitchen.

“Communications received multiple calls from Trident Security Alarm Company stating the alarm was coming from the kitchen area.  Members of Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Mountain View Fire Department, Boulder Rural Department and Boulder Fire Department responded.  When personnel arrived, smoke was visible on the north side of the building.  Crews worked quickly to contain the fire to the Colterra building, and only one precautionary evacuation was made.  Weather conditions were not an aggravating factor for firefighting operations.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of Mountain View Fire Department and is ongoing.  The kitchen of Colterra Food & Wine sustained heavy damage and no other loses reported.”

No injuries were reported in the event.
