Gillett dominates at CSU-Pueblo

On Saturday Mar. 11, the Niwot track and field teams got up in the wee hours and headed south for the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird Invitational.

Niwot junior Mary Gillett won four individual events in the girls meet, the most by any single runner on the day. She secured the first place medal in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.67 seconds, and was also the fastest girl at 200 (26:03), and 400 meters (57.76). In the long-jump, Gillett tied senior teammate Alexis Carroll for the top-spot, with a leap of 17 feet, 1.5 inches.

Carroll also had the winning time in the 100 meter hurdles (15.68) and the triple jump (36’ 11”), where she out-jumped the closest competitor, Discover Canyon’s Jenny Hall, by two full feet.

Senior Jenna McCaffrey led the Cougars distance runners, taking second overall at 3200 meters (11:33.43), and third at 800 meters (2:27.93). Senior Rachel Oliver placed 6th in the discus (92’ 11”) and 15th in shotput (28’08”).

In the boys competition, Niwot sophomore Jeremy Hollingsworth was the top sprinter for the boys in the 100 meter dash. His time of 11.93 seconds was good for 24th overall. Senior Jason Fetters paced the Cougars in 110 meter hurdles, with a ninth-place finish (18.21), while sophomore Nolan Johan was third in 300 meter hurdles (44.29).

Several Niwot freshmen had a strong showing on the day for the boys. Noah Pena was the top Cougar in the 200 (27.62) and 400 meter races (1:00.93), while Cruz Culpepper took third overall in the 3200 meters(10:13.91), and 14th in 800 meters. (2:11.68).

Up next for the Cougars is the Windsor Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 18.
