Cougars fall to Windsor in final dual of the year

The Niwot girls swim team wrapped up the regular season with a non-conference dual against the Windsor Wizards, the last competition before the Northern Conference meet on Feb. 3-4. While most teams are taking a break ahead of the league event, Niwot Coach Sarah Stamp wanted to give her girls one more chance to drop their times.

“Windsor is a really good, super-fast team,” she said ahead of the matchup. “The coach and I added this meet to our schedules so our girls who are still on the border can get some fast swims before we start tapering.”

The Cougars did get some fast swims, including state qualifying times in six events (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 100 backstroke, and 400 freestyle relay.) But at the end of the day, Windsor was the faster team, winning 10 of 12 events, and outscoring the Cougars 116-69.

Niwot claimed the first-place medal in two events, 1 meter diving (Maddie Barkow, 249.35), and the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.77). Freshman Payten Irwin finished second in the 100 freestyle (56.83) and 100 backstroke (1:05.15). She was also a member of the second-place 200 medley relay (2:02.30) and 400 freestyle relay (4:03.21) teams.

Stamp’s sophomore class turned in a solid performance in the meet. Hanna Luo had two second-place finishes, in the 200 individual medley (2:24.01) and 400 freestyle relay, as did Claire Jepson (200 freestyle, 2:11:54; 400 freestyle relay). Meanwhile, Kristi Vu was part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team (with Luo, Ella Thramann, and senior Chase Balman), and the second-place 200 medley relay.

Senior Eva Kitlen was the second-place medalist in the 100 butterfly, and senior Camryn Kenkel was a member of the second-place 200 medley relay team.

Up next for the Cougars is the Northern League Conference Meet, which will be held at Mountain View, Feb. 3-4.
