The Colorado high school cross country season is heading into its final stretch, and Niwot runners are staking their claim to be among the state’s championship contenders.

On Oct. 7, the teams traveled to North Lake Park in Loveland to run in the Northern League meet, where they once again faced district foes Silver Creek and Longmont.

Niwot junior Kenny Lang placed seventh overall in the boys race, with a time of 16 minutes, 34 seconds, while senior Jenna McCaffrey extended her streak of top 10 finishes by snagging the third place medal in the girls race, with a time of 19:15.

Silver Creek was the winning team in the boys division, with 33 points, and the Raptors captured the top three individual spots as well. The Niwot boys placed fourth overall, with 89 points. Juniors Ethan Steiner (16:51) and Oskar Wells (16:53) both finished among the top 15, and sophomore Benjamin Bi (17:35) was 28th.

Last weekend, the Cougars headed out east to the Wiggins Cross Country Invitational, a 5K race with teams from the front range and eastern plains. Lang took first place overall in the boys race, with a winning time of 16 minutes, 21 seconds. It was Lang’s first win of the season, and his third top 10 finish. For Niwot, freshman Ben Klingbeil (18:59) finished in 35th place, followed by senior Jesse Falk (19:21) in 42nd, and freshman Ethan Jiang (19:46) in 50th.
