Niwot girls track wins Boulder County championships
April 27, 2016
The recent bouts of spring weather have derailed some of the activities for the Niwot High School track teams, but that hasn’t stopped their momentum.
Last Wednesday, April 20, the girls track team won the Boulder County Championships for the seventh straight time, and did so in dominant fashion.
While they were only able to win first place in three of the events, it’s the shear depth of the Cougars that overwhelmed their opponents. Niwot scored 152 points in the meet, while the next closest team was Fairview which scored 106.
The three events Niwot won on the day were the 100 meter hurdles and long jump, both won by junior Alexis Carroll, and the 300 meter hurdles, won by senior Kela Fetters.
In the 100 meter hurdles alone, Niwot took home four of the top five spots. Carroll won the event, with sophomores Mackenzie Fidelak and Sophie Grant finishing in second and fifth respectively, and Fetters finishing in fourth.
Fidelak and fellow sophomore Mary Gillett both had outstanding days for the Cougars, even if they didn’t win any events.
Fidelak finished second in the 100 meter hurdles, 200 meter sprint, and 300 meter hurdles while Gillett finished second in the 400 meter run and third in the 200 meter sprint and the long jump.
The boys track team didn’t have as good of showing as the girls did, but still had some positives out of their meet as they finished in 11th place out of 16 teams.
Senior Noah Woeste had the only top three finish for the Cougars, as he finished third in the long jump. Senior Nelson Menjivar also competed well for Niwot finishing seventh in the 110 meter hurdles and sixth 300 meter hurdles.
Junior Alex Oelsner had his best day of the season throwing shot put, which was good enough for a fourth place finish.
Both teams have a little time off now to rest before finishing off the last three meets of their schedule before the State Championships. They compete next on Friday, April 29 at the Colorado Meet of Champions in Highlands Ranch.
