NHS girls tennis finally hitting the court

Series: Niwot girls tennis | Story 4

Weather has been winning the battle for the tennis courts this spring, but Niwot girls tennis is settling into the season with a 2-1 record and getting close to nailing down the lineup.

The team returns three experienced players for the top three singles spots: Junior Alys Pop is #1, Senior Anna Sallee is #2 and Senior Georgia Lang is #3. All played on the team that took third in last year's Class 4A state championships.

Four freshmen have landed a spot on the team. The top three doubles spots all have at least one freshman in the lineup. The fourth doubles team is still up for grabs.

"It's been weird this year. We haven't been together that much," said coach Aimee Keronen. Matches have been rescheduled and practice time limited, making it difficult to settle on a lineup.

Even so, the team has won two out of three matches, defeating Broomfield 5-2 and Ft. Morgan 7-0 last week. The only loss was to perennial power Kent Denver 2-5.

This week is a busy one for the team with the addition of a rescheduled home match against Fairview on Thursday, a home match against Severance on Tuesday and a tournament at Cherry Creek on Saturday. Weather could again be a factor with wind and cool temperatures.

"We don't have much of a choice," said Keronen. "We have to play through it now or we'll get too far behind. It's not ideal, but it's the same for everyone. It's typical girls spring tennis weather. We're used to it."
