Arts Student of the Week--Jonah Fahlin

Jonah Fahlin has always had an artistic side, which he started exploring through digital art. Since coming to Niwot High, however, the sophomore has taken a more hands-on approach to expressing himself, and opened up new worlds of creativity.

"As of recently, I've gotten more into things in the real world, like pencils, canvas, and paper," he said. "I really like to draw on paper. No matter what class I'm in, I'm always doodling. I just really enjoy it."

During the fall semester, Fahlin took his first sculpture class, which opened up yet another doorway for his creativity.

"I really liked sculpture a lot because of the planning process, and the use of so many different materials was fun," he said. "Planning in 3D was way more involving, and it took way more brain power, which I really liked."

The sophomore's newfound enthusiasm for making hands-on artwork has not gone unnoticed. According to Niwot art teacher Crystal Hinds, Fahlin is a "talented visual artist," whose passion for the subject is infectious.

"Jonah is a very diligent worker, always pushing a little bit further for the challenge," she said. "He is helpful and supportive, a joy to be around, and thrives in the art environment. He shares his vivacity and love of art with peers."

Looking ahead to his next two years at Niwot, Fahlin hopes to expand his artistic repertoire to other visual media, starting with collage, a form he called "underrated."

"I really like being able to cut out pictures and make them into a more beautiful picture with other items," he said. "And I feel like collages don't just have to be pictures put together but can be different mediums put together, too."

When he is not making beautiful artwork, Fahlin has been enjoying his English classes, and improving his writing ability. One day, he hopes to pursue a creative career, but is still keeping his options open.
