A sweet competition helps kids in need

On Dec. 12, Niwot Wheel Works hosted the 2nd annual Gingerbread House decorating contest, sponsored by local realtor Deborah Read Fowler.

The 2021 contest attracted a total of 44 entries. On Dec. 11, each contestant received a plain, pre-made house, baked and assembled by professional baker Joan Grunzweig of Joan's Petit Sweets, a former runner-up in the Good Housekeeping national contest. The participants then had about 24 hours to decorate their house for the official competition.

Grunzweig also served as judge and announced the final results. Mark Wingard and family took first place, followed by Kim Hindman in second place, and Monika Warchol and Jen Straus in 3rd.

During the contest, Fowler accepted donations to benefit Cakes4kids, a Niwot-based non-profit that provides birthday and graduation cakes to kids in foster care, and shelters.
