All Local, All The Time

Colorado Gives Day is around the corner

In 1975, the Lutheran Medical Center Foundation was created as a way to support a nonprofit hospital in West Denver. Since then, it has been renamed the "Community First Foundation" (CFF) and has sought to create change beyond just the Denver Metro.

Then, CFF became involved with ColoradoGives.org, an online tool that is a way to connect with and support nearly 3,000 nonprofits around the state. In 2010, CFF and ColoradoGives.org kicked off Colorado Gives Day, which has garnered $355 million in donations to these nonprofits since then.

This year, Colorado Gives day is Dec. 8 and local groups are gearing up to help. One such group is Longmont Meals on Wheels, which is slotted to receive a portion of the $1 million fund from ColoradoGives.org and CFF. The more donations made toward Longmont Meals on Wheels (LMOW), the more money it can receive from this fund.

"Colorado Gives Day is a huge day for us," said Katie Wiser, the development and communication director for LMOW. "It's amazing and we've been getting two to three donations almost every day... it's a day when the more money we get from individuals, the more money we get from the incentive fund and it's kind of a fun, rallying day."

Essentially, if a nonprofit receives, for example, 10% of the total amount of money raised on Colorado Gives Day, the nonprofit will receive an additional 10% from the incentive fund.

To help their mission, a local honey organization set up a donation page for LMOW. In addition to being able to procure a jar of whipped honey, the group also has donation options like, "$25 for 5 hot, nutritious meals."

"I believe in you guys and what you do.so Did I really need to buy another dog bed, or perhaps put that $50 to better use," said Debra Heiser, who participated in the honey campaign, which has since closed.

Wiser said that while the honey drive may have closed, there are still other opportunities to donate. You can schedule donations directly with LMOW and you can also take part in Chuck Rodgers' Christmas light display and donation.

"We used to do it for fun and a few years back, decided to see if we could get people to donate," said Rodgers. His father used to support the organization and Rodgers wanted to continue his efforts.

Other local organizations listed include the Mwebaza Foundation, Hillside School, Flagstaff Academy, Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, Niwot High School Education Foundation, St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation, Longmont Humane Society, the Longmont Theatre Company, Longmont Museum, El Comite de Longmont, The Alexander Dawson School, Temple Grandin School, IDEAS, Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley, Left Hand Watershed Center, Via Mobility Services, and more.

Since ColoradoGives.org is a year-round, online donation platform, social distancing is built into many of the donations. Additionally, since it is the official online donation website for Colorado Gives Day, using the site is the best way to give to registered nonprofits.
