All Local, All The Time

Area congregations rise to the COVID challenge

Since the COVID-19 crisis began, area churches and synagogues have responded with incredible nimbleness, creativity and generosity in meeting the heightened spiritual, communal, and practical needs of their parishioners.

Many congregations quickly transitioned to live streaming their services to parishioners and the wider community, and some even have experienced an increase in attendance as a result. One local pastor attributed this increase to the fact that there is no travel time to and fro, and to the fact that now parishioners can “go” to church in their pajamas. Parishioners who have moved away can once again “attend” services remotely at their favorite church and stay connected in ways that were not possible pre-COVID.

Some congregations are again offering in-person services and socials in their buildings or outdoors while following safe distancing and other protocols. Reservations are required for some, so be sure to check online for the most up to date information. For those not yet comfortable attending in person, all offer online options for participation, with most live streaming their services.

A wide variety of online Bible and Torah study classes are also being offered, as well as many other types of online programming. Centering prayer sessions, midweek bedtime stories, and book groups are just a few examples of these. Complete listings and sign up information are available in the calendar section on congregation websites.

Pastoral counseling has been greatly expanded and ranges from in--person meetings, to phone calls, to Zoom. Food and clothing pantries have also been established.

It is most gratifying to learn of all that is being offered by the faith community, and their hard work and generosity of spirit are inspiring.
