Annual art show is springing out

Three artists hit the sunny sidewalks of 2nd Ave. to capture just the right scene for their entries in the Why Not Niwot? art show. From left to right, Lamya Deeb, Valerie Meyers, and Jeannie DeMarinis create their depictions of Niwot in oil paint. The public is encouraged to visit all of the businesses displaying paintings entered in the art show and then vote on their favorite.

Springtime brings out the sun, the flowers, and the artists in town. Now in its eighth year, the annual Why Not Niwot? Juried Art Show is guaranteed to draw a talented collection of painters and other artists, each basing their piece on what’s special about Niwot.

More than 30 artists will display their entries beginning Friday, April 5 in conjunction with April’s First Friday Art Walk and continuing through Sunday, May 31. The event is sponsored by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association (NCAA) and hosted by businesses throughout town,

The public is invited to tour the works of the contestants and then vote on their favorite piece. Start at any participating location, pick up a People’s Choice Award ballot, be sure to get your ballot stamped at each hosting location along the way, and after you’ve seen the entire display, select your favorite piece. The winning People’s Choice artist will receive a $100 prize.

Each ballot submitted will be entered into a drawing for a participant from the public to take home a print of the winning piece and each of the entries will be available for purchase after the event.

In addition to the People’s Choice Award, the art will also be judged by a jury of experts. The winning piece will be made into several formats — cards, prints, and a wine label. Proceeds from sales of those items — which will be available for purchase at Osmosis Art Gallery and other businesses — will go toward maintenance funding for the Niwot Children’s Park and Whistlestop Park.

The panel of judges for the art show consists of Mary Williams of Mary Williams Fine Art, Allyson Bell of Tool Studios, and Lisa Rivard of Lisa Rivard Illustrations. The grand prize winner receives $500, second place $250 and third place $100.

All of the prize winners will be announced at the First Friday Art Walk on June 7, in front of Osmosis Gallery at 6:15 p.m. The Niwot Community Semi-Marching Free Grange Band will perform during the ceremony, beginning at 5:45 p.m.

Businesses hosting the art pieces in the competition include Osmosis Art Gallery, Pebble Art Jewelry, Wise Buys Antiques, The Niwot Inn, Shop Girl, Inkberry Books, Fly Away Home Décor, Niwot Jewelry & Gifts, Osmosis Art Gallery, Wise Buys Antiques, The Old Oak Coffeehouse, Niwot Wheelworks, Edward Jones, and Little Bird.
