All Local, All The Time

Centennial Ballet presents Sleeping Beauty

The Centennial State Ballet will be presenting The Sleeping Beauty at Niwot High School on April 21 and 22.

This marks the 20th season for the ballet, so it’s going to be a big one. For the first time in those 20 years, the production of The Sleeping Beauty will be the entire show.

“We’ve done pieces of The Sleeping Beauty in the past, but the full production is a prologue plus three acts and two intermissions,” Lawrence said. “So the full piece is extensive, so we hadn’t taken it on previously. But this is our 20th anniversary season so we thought it’d be the perfect time to put on the full production.”

The cast is made up of students in the pre-collegiate intensive ballet program, minus one guest star.

Students from Niwot High School are seniors Elise Ferguson (Lilac Fairy), Allie Garduno (Courtier Couple), junior Hannah Ornelas (Minion, Nurse, Hungarian Princess, White Cat), sophomore Trinity Pleffner (Courtier Couple), and freshmen Victoria Isuani (Nurse) and Helen Ambrose (Minion, Silver Jewel, Carabosse in Ballet Petit).

Niwot Elementary second graders Aileen O’Connor and Lyla Morin will be playing Mini-Minions and Court Pages.

The $60,000 production will include a full symphony orchestra, new sets, new costumes and lighting. The orchestra will be playing the original score by Tchaikovsky.

“It’s always good to put on the well-known storybook ballets,” Lawrence said. “The show promotes itself, the audience is familiar the story. We use the high school because they have the full pit. And they have wings, it’s a true theater. We need that many seats for the audience and the full orchestra.”

There will also be a Ballet Petit at 11 a.m. on April 21, which is a shorter version geared for a younger audience.

“This is a great way for the little ones to be exposed to ballet and not have to sit through the entire program,” Lawrence said. “It’s narrated also so they can follow along easier.”

The main performance is at 2 p.m. on April 22, with an encore at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 22. All performances will be held at the NHS auditorium located at 8989 Niwot Road.

Tickets are $22 for adults, $17 for seniors and students. They can be purchased online at www.centennialstateballet.org, via phone at 303-772-1335. Tickets will also be available at the box office one hour before curtain.
