Girls swimming: Niwot takes second at All City Meet

Niwot swimmers took first or second place in seven of 12 events at the four-team All-City meet on Jan. 20, but it wasn’t quite enough to overtake the Silver Creek juggernaut. With a team score of 375 points, the Cougars finished second to the Raptors (455) for the fourth straight year, and will have to wait until 2019 for their next chance to reclaim the “Best in Longmont” title.

“I’m thrilled to get second - the girls did great,” Niwot head coach Sarah Stamp said following the four-team meet of schools in the Longmont area. A surprising Longmont team took first in three events, scoring 348 team points, a closer third-place finish than anticipated. “Longmont definitely gave us more run for our money that we were expecting.”

Niwot swimmers also took the top spot in three events on the day. Freshman Emiley Yie’s time of 54.75 seconds in the 100 freestyle was both the fastest time of the day in that event, as well as a personal best for her in high school competition this season, as was her third-place time of 2:14.10 in the 200 individual medley (IM). She also swam the third leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:41.65), and was the final leg of the second-place 200 freestyle (1:45.23) relay team.

Sophomore Payten Irwin also had an impressive performance on the day. In the 100 butterfly, she came from behind to overtake Silver Creek’s Brandi Vu for first place, finishing in a state-qualifying time of 58.17. She also swam on the 200 medley relay, which finished second with a time of 1:53.70, and the 400 freestyle relay with Yie, Abbie Shaw, and Hanna Luo.

“It feels incredible, I’m really happy,” Irwin said after her win in the butterfly. “I was pretty nervous, but once I get into the pool, it goes away.”

Elsewhere on the day, sophomore Shaw took second in two individual events (100 backstroke, 200 freestyle) and was on both the 200 freestyle and medley relay teams. Junior Luo took third overall in the 100 butterfly (1:01.22), swam the third leg to the 400 freestyle relay, and posted a state qualifying time in the 200 IM (2:18.10).

“Not having any divers today definitely was a major disadvantage, in terms of trying to close the gap,” Stamp said. Niwot’s two novice divers, Halie Ostrom and Amber Nusser, did not qualify to compete in the final round. “When they’re scoring in an event, and you have zero, it’s hard to make it up.”

“Some of our top swimmers were a little disappointed in their times today,” Stamp continued. “At the same time, there were lots of PR’s and even some of our top swimmers were hitting times that hadn’t hit in a while. All around, it was an excellent day. It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t pull out the win over Silver Creek.”

Niwot hosts Mountain View for their last dual of the season on Jan. 23, then Stamp and her team will have some time off to prepare for the Northern League meet on Feb. 2-3, where the Cougars will have another shot at beating Silver Creek.
