All Local, All The Time

Obituary – Ed Navarro

Edward (Moon) Thomas Navarro of Longmont, Colorado passed away on December 31, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette after a long and courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born on August 18, 1953 in Pueblo, Colorado to Adrian and Marie (Belen) Navarro, and was the third eldest child of nine.

After graduating from Pueblo South High School, Edward left Pueblo to attend college and obtain his Juris Doctorate degree at the University of Colorado-Boulder. It is while attending CU that Edward met the love of his life, Gertrude (Trudy) Gutierrez. Ed graduated from CU with a bachelor’s degree in 1974, and graduated again from CU Law School in 1980. Ed and Trudy were married on August 23, 1980.

They made their home in Longmont where they raised their two children, Emily and Edward (Lucky). Ed was a long-time attorney in Longmont. He was also an active volunteer with various organizations such as the Women’s Crisis Shelter Center, Stephen Ministries, and Hospice. Ed was a co-founder of El Comité in Longmont.

When Ed was not working or volunteering, he was out pursuing his passion of photography. He spent many years taking photos for Niwot High School, CU Basketball, the Left Hand Valley Courier, the Special Olympics softball teams, and various other high school and collegiate teams, and family and friends. He made sure that every student-athlete at Niwot High School had access to his photos, which numbered over 1 million at the time of his death.

Ed also provided his images to NHS opposing teams, and travelled to collegiate contests to photograph local athletes who went on to compete in college. He was the sports photographer for the Left Hand Valley Courier for the past 13 years, providing his images pro bono.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife, Trudy, and his four granddaughters Courtney, Olivia, Zoey, and Carmen. He will be greatly missed.

Ed is survived by his wife, Trudy Navarro of Longmont; daughter Emily (Eric) Marcellus of Longmont; son Lucky Navarro of Longmont; four granddaughters, Courtney, Olivia, Zoey, and Carmen; his brothers John (Cindy) Navarro of Mesa, Arizona, Esteban Navarro of Murrieta, California, Fred Navarro of Pueblo, Colorado, and Charles Navarro of Pueblo, Colorado; his sisters Nancy Montoya of Pueblo, Colorado and Sara (Amy) Navarro of Pinewood Springs, Colorado; along with many nieces and nephews.
