With 176.75 team points, Niwot captured second place overall at last weekend’s Class 4A State gymnastics meet at Thornton H.S.
Despite leading after their first two rotations (floor and vault), the Cougars fell just shy of beating Anastasia Buzalsky and the Elizabeth Cardinals (179.15), who took home their fourth state title since 2009. Buzalsky took the top individual honors with high scores in all but one of the rotations.
Niwot gymnast Lindsay Chohon took second in the All-Around competition, with 36.675 points to Buzalsky’s 37.125. The junior nabbed second-place finishes in vault (9.375) and floor (9.225), and top-ten finishes in the uneven bars (8.95) and balance beam (9.125).
Niwot’s Taylor Green (35.725) was fifth in the All-Around competition, coming in third in floor (9.175) and fifth in the balance beam (9.150). Senior Lilliana Martin (35.275) was ninth All-Around, and freshman Grace Stephenson (35.250) was tenth.
In the Individual event finals held the day after the team competition, Niwot gymnasts captured four of the five top spots in the floor exercise. Chohon was again runner-up, with a 9.65, and then took third in vault (9.375). She finished fourth on both the beam (9.300) and bars (8.800).
Martin took sixth in vault (9.050) and uneven bars (8.675), and tied Green for fourth place in floor (9.400). Green was also fifth in the beam competition. Stephenson edged out Martin and Green for third in the floor (9.425).
