All Local, All The Time

Bringing Light to the Fire House Museum

Efforts are underway to bring attention to one of Niwot’s most treasured historical gems – the Fire House Museum. It’s a tad too easy to be chatting on a stroll down 2nd Avenue and completely miss the lean wooden structure that sits back from the façades of the adjoining buildings.

The Niwot Historical Society (NHS) recently put into motion two efforts – the renovation of the fire house museum building, and the restoration of the building site.

NHS has successfully raised the needed funds to preserve the building and is now focused on making sure the building’s location doesn’t go unnoticed.

Formed by the NHS, the Niwot Fire House Museum Site Restoration committee, headed up by local architect Margo Leach, is eager to raise approximately $18,000 to improve the museum setting.

Leach’s role, including oversight of the implementation of the project, is to design the building’s forecourt in keeping with the early 1900’s, the era in which the firehouse was constructed.

The Fire House Site Improvement committee also includes Felicia Santelli, Karlynn Spreder, and NHS President Kathy Koehler, who are working together to make decisions on the project, to educate the community, and to ask for donations.

At the forefront is the incredible opportunity the museum offers to engage the children who tour the museum and are able to experience the fascinating artifacts on display.

The three site elements to be upgraded are lighting, signage and landscaping.

All donations over $500 will be recognized with plaques, and donors are able to designate specific elements they wish to fund, such as the light post or a section of fence.

The Fire House Museum is open for visitors and will take in-person donations at the next First Friday Artwalk, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3.

All donations are tax deductible and may be sent to NHS, PO Box 354, Niwot, CO 80544 or go to: http://www.NiwotHistoricalSociety.org and click on donate. As an added benefit, donors to the project will also be given a membership to the Niwot Historical Society.
