Gymnastics: Niwot takes third in League Championships

With a season-high score of 178.35, the Niwot gymnastics team finished third in the 2017 Front Range League championships, behind Class 5A teams Thornton (184.325) and Broomfield (183.225). Individually, Niwot’s Lindsay Chohon placed third in the all-around competition, with a fourth-place finish in beam and a fifth-place in both the floor and vault.

“You come to this meet, and you just put it all out there,” Niwot head coach Marisa Purcell said following the seven-team competition, which also saw the JV finish in third. “And they did that tonight. Every single one of them.”

In the final junior varsity competition of the year, sophomore Kaia Bergen took fourth in the floor event, while fellow sophomores Amber Nusser and Emily Ewing took fourth and fifth respectively in the vault. Junior Isabel Mitchell also made a return to competition after being sidelined for the past several weeks with an injury.

Purcell was especially pleased with the performance of senior Lilliana Martin, who has been limited in competition this season due to injury. As both Martin’s coach and her mother, Purcell said these final meets of the season have an extra significance this year.

“I’m trying to keep my ‘Mom’ emotions in check,” Purcell said. “She had a wonderful meet tonight, and she’s had some tears today. I’m just trying to encourage her to keep going. I’m waiting to be ‘Mom’ at state.”

Niwot heads into next week’s Regional competition ranked second in Class 4A. Purcell said she thinks the team is hitting its peak at the right time.

“We came together as a team tonight, all the way from junior varsity to varsity,” she said. “Varsity hit six-for-six on the beam, which hasn’t happened this season, so it’s very encouraging for the girls going into the next tough two weeks.”

Up next for the Cougars is the Class 4A Regional at Mountain Range H.S. on Oct. 28. If they are among the top three teams, they advance to the Class 4A State meet on Nov. 3-4 at Thornton H.S.
