Niwot Nifties 4-H ready for fair

The Niwot Nifties 4-H Club is in the thick of this year’s Boulder County Fair.

This week will see the interview judging of projects ranging from showmanship of small animals to all other general projects that the 23 members have been working on for the past year.

Niwot Nifties leaders Mary Klingbeil and Cindy Shepherd have been helping guide the members through the last year.

“The members in our club pick all sorts of projects,” Klingbeil said. “We have a really nice balance of small animal projects, general projects and shooting sports. They’ve been working really hard on their projects.”

The shooting sports events are already completed, but the members in other categories will be done at the county level after Thursday.

“Those kids have been training on showmanship,” Klingbeil said. “The work happens all year, the fair is where they get to show what they’ve learned and how far they’ve come this year, so it’s really exciting. It is the highlight of our year for sure.”

County fair events run well into August, but will give many some time off before either heading to the state fair in Pueblo, or before they start school and next year’s project.

“The clubs in the county have some form of celebrating,” Klingbeil said. “But they do get a bit of a break, some do go to the state fair. They usually enjoy that, and we do typically get a lot of kids that go to the state fair.

“We’re really proud of the work that they put in. They have a lot going on, and 4-H is a commitment. It helps them learn valuable life skills for their futures.”
