All Local, All The Time

Martinez and Goldfarb excel

Niwot’s Legion B baseball team has had to overcome a lack of varsity experience as players battle against other local teams’ experienced lineups.

One of the reasons is that the top returning battery for NHS, pitcher Caleb Martinez and catcher Colton Goldfarb, have spent the summer playing for the BoCo 19U team, consisting of players from a variety of local high schools.

Martinez, who finished last season as the Cougars’ top hurler, and Goldfarb, who caught virtually every game for last season’s high school varsity, helped the BoCo team to a victory in the Boulder National Invitational tournament July 13. Martinez went the distance on the mound for BoCo, giving up only three hits in a 4-1 victory over the Gameday Friars 18U team. Goldfarb drove in the final run for BoCo with a fielder’s choice, while Martinez struck out two of the final three hitters to preserve the victory.

After losing 10 seniors to graduation, Niwot’s high school squad should see the benefits next spring of having Martinez and Goldfarb spending the summer competing at a high level while other players on the Legion B squad gain valuable experience.
