Student-Athlete of the Week: Kailee Stobbe

Kailee Stobbe, a standout forward for the Niwot girls soccer team, is the LHVC Student-Athlete of the Week.

Earlier this month, Stobbe was named second team All-State for 2017 by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). While grateful for the honor, the co-captain was more concerned about her teammates also getting their rightful acclaim.

“It was super-cool to see my name on the list, but I looked for my younger girls first,” she said about her reaction to the All-State team announcement. “It was super cool that Allie Colvin got honorable mention because she’s been on varsity forever and she deserves the recognition.” Colvin, who will be a senior next fall, just completed her third varsity season as Niwot’s keeper.

In her final season at Niwot, Stobbe led the Cougars to a 12-5 overall record, including a 6-1 conference mark, and their first Northern League title since 2009. She was the team’s leading scorer, with 13 goals, which was good for fourth overall in the Northern League. She also led the team in total points (33), shots on goal (37) and total shots (54). She had four multiple-goal performances on the year, including a three-score game against Mead on April 15, and was instrumental in the team’s 4-3 double-OT playoff win over Erie, with a goal and a key assist to keep the Cougars in the game. In her three varsity seasons with the team, Stobbe played 41 games and scored 27 goals and 16 assists.

Stobbe wasn’t just a standout on the soccer field. An outstanding student, she maintained a 3.75 GPA over her four years at Niwot, despite a course load full of AP classes. At a school where academic excellence is taken for granted even among the athletes, Stobbe said that athletics can be a great motivator for keeping those grades high.

“Niwot’s known for being an academically smart school,” she explained. “If you’re on an athletic team, you’re also pretty inclined to be intellectual and have good grades. Soccer helped me keep my grades up, because it’s not just you on the line with your grades. All those other girls need you to play.”

Next month, Stobbe is taking her talents to Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. where she has been accepted into the honors program. There, she hopes to study sports management and business, with hopes of working for a professional sports franchise some day.
