Stager named National MaxPreps Athlete of the Year

Tommy Stager, student-athlete from Niwot High School, has been named the recipient of the MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year Award, presented in conjunction with the United States Marines Corps. The presentation will be made during the Senior Talent Show at Niwot High School on May 25 at 7 p.m. by special guest presenter Rulon Gardner, American Gold Medal Wrestler who competed in the 2000 Olympic Games, and U.S. Marine SGT Daniel Fitzgerald.

MaxPreps, which is the online source for high school sports news, results and statistics, has teamed up with the U.S. Marines Corps to honor some of America’s most deserving student-athletes with the High School Athlete of the Year Award.

According to the MaxPreps press release, “This title is given to any athlete that any American community would be proud to call its own. The program is designed to honor athletes who display ideals that the Marines stand for like bravery, dedication, perseverance, personal sacrifice for others and being a positive influence in one’s community. It’s not about stats. It’s about the bigger picture, or a single moment that puts individual ideals ahead of the game. One male and one female athlete are chosen as the Athlete of the Year. Any sport or grade is eligible, as long as the athlete is currently in high school.

“Tommy Stager has been the most deserving student athlete for the 2016-17 school year at Niwot High School displaying ideals that the Marines stand for.”

Stager is a part of the wrestling team at Niwot, winning a state championship this season in Class 4A. He has committed to attend the Air Force Academy where he will be part of the wrestling team.

The winners will receive a featured article and video on MaxPreps and CBS Sports.
