Webster wins AJGA title

Fairview High golfer Kelsey Webster won the American Junior Golf Association Girls’ Division title at Meadowbrook Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, WI, Sunday May 6, with scores of 83-82, for a 165 total. In accepting the medal, Webster said, “This is my first AJGA event that I’ve ever played in.About a year ago I started playing golf seriously and my scores started dropping. It’s been really fun, such a fun journey.”

Webster, who lives in Gunbarrel, continued, “I’d like to thank my dad and mom for just supporting me, no matter what, and getting me out here to this tournament.. I’d also like to thank my coaches, my swing coach, Dan Sniffen, as well as my coach from my high school, John Zerwin.” She went on to thank the staff at Meadowbrook, including the course manager, the food and beverage staff, and her competitors.

Conditions at the course were far from ideal. Bob Webster, Kelsey’s father, described it as “25-mile per hour winds coming off Lake Michigan” the first day, which saw his daughter take the lead after 18 holes. The second day was a 30-minute delayed start due to frost on the course. But in spite of the cold, her performance was one stroke better than the first day, giving Webster the medal for the tournament, which is one of the final events in the Junior Golf Hub Preview Series.

Webster travelled to Wisconsin after winning the Front Range League title last Thursday with Fairview, posting the best score averaged over the five league tournaments.
