Track & Field: Niwot girls take 2 team titles

The Niwot girls track and field team continued to dominate the local competition, picking up wins at the St. Vrain Re-1J District meet on March 23 and at the Broomfield Shootout on March 25. The boys also fared well at the District meet, finishing second out of nine teams, and placed 23rd at the Broomfield meet, in a 33-team field that included several Class 5A schools.

It was another impressive week for junior Mary Gillett and her senior teammate Alexis Carroll. At the St. Vrain meet, held this year at Mead High School, Gillett set a district record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.75 seconds. She also took first place in the 200m (25.58) and 400m (59.06) sprints. She had the top long jump distance of the day (18’7”), but prevailing wind conditions kept that result from being official for a state qualification.

At the Broomfield Shootout, Gillett placed sixth in the 100m (12.58) in a field that included five of last year’s top 10 finishers at the 5A state championships. She captured the top spot in the 300 hurdles (45.81), was second in the 200m (25.29), and third in the long jump (16’11”).

Carroll, meanwhile, recorded her first sub-15-second race in the 100 hurdles at the Broomfield meet, finishing in 14.79, and capturing the top spot by a comfortable margin. Two days earlier, her winning 100 hurdles time of 15.15 at the District meet was more than two seconds faster than her closest competitor’s.

Carroll also notched second in the 300 hurdles (48.58) at the St. Vrain meet, and third in the pole vault (9’0”), while her 17’ 8.25” long jump was good for first at the Broomfield meet.

Senior Jenna McCaffrey also continued to notch impressive times in the distance events. At St. Vrain, she finished first in the 1600m (5:31.04) and third in the 800m (2:32.70). She was 13th in the 3200m at Broomfield (11:42.25).

Elsewhere in the Gillett family, freshman Elise Gillett was fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.99) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (53.16) at the District meet. At the Shootout, she was 33rd in the 200m (29.36), and 17th in the 400m (1:06.39), but shaved more than a second off of her 100 hurdles time to finish 12th (17.88). Senior Claire Gillett, meanwhile, was fourth in the 400m (1:03.46), and 26th in the 200m (28.81) at Broomfield, and second in the 800m (2:30.73) at St. Vrain.

Sophomore Erika Timbang, making her first appearance since the Pueblo Invitational on March 9, placed third in the 400m (1:03.17) and 35th in the 100m at Broomfield. Finally, senior Rachel Oliver was very competitive in the District event, taking second in the discus (92’-10”) and third in shotput (31’-4.5”). At Broomfield, she placed seventh in the discus (104’-3”) and 11th in shotput (30’-6”) at Broomfield.

On the boys side, Niwot turned some heads at this year’s St. Vrain meet, finishing second to Longmont with 124.42 points. Junior Alex Herman, in his first meet for the Cougars this season, topped the boys field in the 100m, finishing with a time of 11.96 seconds. He was also fourth in the 200m (23.97). Sophomore Jeremy Hollingsworth was just behind Herman in the sprints, finishing fourth in the 100m (12.04) and fifth in the 200m (24.00).

Senior Alex Oelsner had the day’s longest shotput throw (47’-1”), and was ninth in discus (110’-8”). Sophomore Isaiah Shurtleff finished fifth overall in the discus throw (129’-1.5”), while junior Max Towlen was seventh (123’-0”).

Niwot runners Kamran Elahi (2:07.12) and Benjamin Bi (2:09.89) took second and third place respectively in the 800m run, while freshman Cruz Culpepper was third the 1600m (4:49.17). Junior Ethan Steiner finished fourth in the 3200m (10:55.77) and fifth in the 1600m (4:58.48). Sophomore Nolan Jordan, meanwhile, was third in the 300 hurdles (43.77) sixth in the 110 hurdles (18.63).

Facing a much more competitive field at the Broomfield Shootout, the boys were not as successful as the girls overall, but there were some notable individual performances.

Oelsner took fourth overall in shotput (48’-0.5”), while junior Oskar Wells finished seventh overall in the 800m (2:01.40). Hollingsworth placed 13th in the 200m (23.95), while Herman was 17th (24.25). Herman was also 16th in the 400m (54.41). Culpepper took 16th in the 1600m (4:44.35), but beat his St. Vrain time by nearly five seconds.

The Cougars will be back on the track on April 1 for the Lyons Invite, followed by the Prairie Hawk Twilight meet at Prairie View High School on April 4.
