Tennis team falls at Cheyenne Mountain

The Niwot girls tennis team lost 5-2 in an away match to perennial power Cheyenne Mountain on Wednesday, March 22. It was the second straight loss on the road for the team after a home win over Colorado Academy to begin the season.

At the top of the singles bracket, Taylor Thulson went down in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, her first defeat of the season. Rachel Drake at number three also fell in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Cougars’ lone singles victory on the day came in the number two spot, as Julia Pentz climbed out of an early hole to win in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Niwot didn’t fare much better in the doubles matches, losing three out of four. At number one doubles Junior Jewel Ng saw varsity action for the first time this season, pairing with Tehnley White in place of Sophie Williams. White and Ng lost a straight-setter, 6-0, 6-1.

Amanda Duquette and Erin O’Neill at number two doubles ramped things up in the second of their two sets but failed to push the match to a third set, losing 6-2, 7-6.

The number three spot provided the Cougars with their lone doubles victory on the day, as Lily Sieben and Avery O’Neill won 6-2, 6-4. The number four team, Maedee Trank-Greene and Yui Ishikawa, fell 6-0, 6-3.

The Cougars will look to re-group with a trio of matches on consecutive days in the week after spring break, heading north to face Thompson Valley on April 4, then returning home to match up with Broomfield on April 5 and Silver Creek on April 6.
