Stager extends tournament streak with title at Thornton Invitational

At the Thornton Invitational last weekend, Niwot senior Tommy Stager won a 9-5 decision over Rangeview’s Deron Solomon in the 145-pound championship match to capture his fifth consecutive tournament title. Stager’s record improved to 33-2 on the season, and he remains first in Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings for the 4A 145-pound division.

Stager’s 28 team points propelled his team to a 14th place finish (out of 21). Junior Jose Lopez (285 pounds) lost to Parker North-Wanner of Florence in the third consolation round, but scored seven team points on the day based on a first-round pin at 1:44, and another pin in the second consolation round at the 2:08 mark. Lopez is 13-15 on the season.

Nathan Hemenway also lost his third consolation round match, by a 7-3 decision to Dominic Romero of Dolores Huerta, and ended the day with three team points after pinning his opponent in the second consolation round 48 seconds into the match. Hemenway’s season mark stands at 16-13. Luis Sosa (126), who is 5-10 on the season, won a 6-4 decision in the third consolation round, earning two team points. Brandon Barton (138), who is 11-13 so far this season, also won his first found by pinning his Palmer Ridge opponent at the 5:38 mark, earning four team points for the Cougars.

Jovani Lopez (220) and David Koon (138) also wrestled for the Cougars, but did not score, though Koon won his first consolation round by a pin at 2:05.

The Cougars had just one dual last the prior week, a 70-12 loss at the hands of Thompson Valley. Stager was Niwot’s sole winner in contested matches, pinning Hunter Williams at 3:20. Jose Lopez won by forfeit in the 285-pound division for the only other Cougar win. Niwot forfeited matches at 113, 126, 132, 138,160, 170 and 182 pounds. Cougars Max Percherzewski (106), Abdullah Aziz (152), and Daniel Torres (220) all lost their matches by fall, while Hemenway, lost by major decision (10-1) to the Eagles’ Chris Ringus.

Niwot is back on the mat for a triangular meet against Skyline and Weld Central at home on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The Cougars head to Mountain View for a dual on Feb. 2, and then have a break ahead of the Class 4A Region 2 tournament, which begins on Feb. 10.
