Niwot Legion B makes comeback, beats Fairview three times

After suffering several losses at a tournament in Omaha earlier in June, Niwot Legion B baseball came back to win four of its past five games.

The 4A team beat Fairview, a 5A team, twice on Tuesday, June 21. In the first game, each team temporarily held the lead several times until the fifth inning when Niwot racked up six runs to Fairview’s one. The score ended with Niwot winning 10-5.

The second game against Fairview ended with Niwot narrowly winning 14-13. The Cougars were down 10-5 at the bottom of the fifth inning, despite Trevor Green going 4-4 by doubling in the fifth inning and singling in the first, third and sixth innings. Niwot retook the lead in the sixth inning by garnering an impressive eight runs.

In the final inning with the score tied at 13 runs, Chandler Snead led the team to a win when he singled, bringing home Joey DesEnfants.

“We had some good outings in both of the games,” Coach Craig McBride said.

McBride noted that Snead and Joey Neve performed particularly well in both of the games against Fairview.

“Chandler Snead hit pretty well that day,” McBride said. “He had a walk-off hit in the second game when we came back to beat [Fairview] 14-13. Joey Neve was really hitting well in both of those games too.”

On Thursday, June 23, Niwot began a Denver metro area tournament by losing to Wheat Ridge 9-7, despite gaining six more hits than the opposing team.

The Niwot Legion B team soon recovered by winning two games the next day against Fairview and Northglenn.

On Friday, June 24, Niwot beat Fairview for a third time with a final score of 8-0, expedited by an early lead with six runs in the third inning. Griffin Mitchell had a perfect 3-3 day at the plate, improving his batting average, and Ben Goss’s pitching cemented the win as he allowed no earned runs and struck out three batters during his five innings on the mound.

Niwot won a final time in the tournament by beating Northglenn 9-8. The sixth-inning game was a close match, with five lead changes throughout.

Niwot Legion B will play in another tournament this coming Fourth of July weekend in the Denver metro area.
