Stager wins state wrestling titles

Although the Colorado high school wrestling season ended two months ago, Niwot junior Tommy Stager is continuing to add to his impressive resume.

On Saturday, May 14, Stager won the Colorado USA Wrestling Junior National Team Qualifying Tournaments in both Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling at 138 pounds. This qualified him to represent Colorado in the USA Wrestling National Duals in Tulsa, OK in June, as well as the USA Wrestling National Championships in Fargo, ND in July.

On May 21, Stager won the Colorado USA Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournaments in both Freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling, this time wrestling at 132 pounds. This was his first state championship in Greco Roman wrestling, and his third consecutive state title in Freestyle wrestling. Stager defeated two CHSAA State Champions, a State Runner-Up, and a State Placer to win the Freestyle title in his weight class.

On May 28, he will travel to Virginia to compete in the NHSCA National Duals with the Colorado Vision Quest Team, coached by Tom Blair. Stager will follow that with a trip to the UWW Cadet World Team Trials in Ohio with the GRIT Wrestling Club, coached by Bill Greenwood, and the AAU Disney Duals in Florida, again with Tom Blair and Colorado Vision Quest.

Stager’s overall record for the 2015-2016 wrestling campaign is 107-16, including the high school season (47-5), pre-season and post-season national tournaments (31-9), and Olympic style tournaments (club) (29-2).
