Niwot track continues season despite weather delays

The weather hasn’t exactly been kind to the Niwot High School spring sports season, but it hasn’t derailed the momentum that both the boys and girls track teams are creating as their season progresses.

Last Monday, March 21, the girls team took first place against a strong field at the Greeley Central Invitational despite sitting through a rain delay. The boys had an impressive showing of their own, finishing third.

Later in the week, the girls took home second place at the Runners Roost of Fort Collins while the boys walked away with a ninth-place finish.

At the Greeley Central Invitational, Niwot almost doubled the score of the next closest team on the girls side. They finished with 230 points, while Eaton, who finished second, scored 125.

The Cougars finished in first place in 11 of the 20 events on the day, and took first and second place in the 100 meters, 3200 meters, 100 meter hurdles, and the long jump. They also took third place in both the 100 meters and long jump.

Senior Kela Fetters was fantastic on the day, finishing first in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 300 meter hurdles. Sophomore Mary Gillett also had a great day, taking home first in the 800 meters and the long jump, and also finished in second place in the 100 meters.

Junior Jenna McCaffrey cleaned up the distance events, winning the 1600 meter and 3200 meter races.

On the boys side, senior Isaac Flores was the only athlete to win his events, taking home first in both the 800 meter and 1600 meter races.

While they only had two wins on the day, there were still plenty of boys who finished well in their events. Sophomore Oskar Wells and junior Carter Osteen finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 800 meters, while senior Nelson Menjivar walked away with third in the 110 meter hurdles and second in the 300 meter hurdles.

The 4x100 meter relay team and the 4x400 meter relay team both finished in second for the meet, while junior Alex Oelsner and sophomore Max Towlen finished in third place for the shot put and discus, respectively.

Both teams look to continue their upward trajectory in their next meet this week as they take on the Mountain Range Mustang Invitational on Saturday, April 2 at 8:30 a.m.
