  • Unlikely champion leads Niwot girls to fourth straight state title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 3, 2021

As predicted, the nationally-ranked Niwot girls cross country team ran away with the title after a historically dominating performance at the 2021 Class 4A state championships, held Oct. 30 at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. All seven of Niwot's competitors finished in the top 16, and five of them finished in the top 10. That added up to just 20 points in the final standings, a record low across all classifications. But almost no one predicted that unheralded Eva Klingbeil...

  • Prok leads Niwot to perfect finish at cross country regionals

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

Not much is perfect in life, but at least two things at the 2021 Class 4A Region 3 cross country championships on Oct. 22 were: the mild autumn weather, and the Niwot girls' final score in the team standings. Paced by sophomore Mia Prok with a time of 17 minutes 29 seconds, the Cougars took the first seven spots on the leaderboard, earning just 15 points, the lowest total possible. "I think we were all just excited to run here and have as many in the top as we could," Prok said following the...

  • Niwot boys claim third straight regional title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

The results weren't quite as perfect for Niwot in the boys' race, but with six runners in the top 10, it was a title-winning performance nonetheless. Behind defending Class 4A champion Zane Bergen in first place, the Cougars scored just 22 points, more than 30 ahead of second place Centaurus (56), and 64 ahead of third-place Denver South (84). With the win, Niwot captured the Class 4A Region 3 crown for the third year ini a row, and will now move on to try for a third consecutive state title....

  • Niwot teams claim first at Desert Twilight XC Festival

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 29, 2021

On Sept. 24, Niwot cross country added another data point to the growing body of evidence that its teams are among the best in the country. With a colorful Arizona sunset as a backdrop, both the Niwot boys and girls took first overall in the Sweepstakes races at the Desert Twilight XC Festival, a prestigious regional competition featuring nationally ranked teams from five western states. As he has for the past two years, Zane Bergen led the way for the Niwot boys, finishing first in the 232-runn...

  • Bergen leads ailing Niwot boys to a win at the St. Vrain Invitational

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 22, 2021

Niwot cross country coach Kelly Christensen wasn't surprised when nationally-ranked runner Zane Bergen crossed the finish line first at the St. Vrain Invitational on Sept. 18, but he was surprised to see so many Cougars on the senior's heels. "We had some congestion and sniffles early in the week with two or three of them," Christensen said, quickly adding that everyone had tested negative for COVID. "So they didn't really get a chance to do much this week, other than a few horrible runs, so I...

  • All signs point to repeat state titles for Niwot cross country in 2021

    Jocelyn Rowley|Aug 18, 2021

Another championship sweep for Niwot at the 2021 Class 4A cross country meet isn't a foregone conclusion, but it's hard to dismiss the strong evidence in favor of it. Returning to the varsity are two of Colorado's fastest high school distance runners in Zane Bergen and Mia Prok, plus a battle-hardened pack of veterans that is still in shape from the Cougars' recent title run at the state track and field championships. Add to that a coach looking to list another two state titles on his resume,...

  • Niwot track standout commits to Stanford

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 28, 2020

Stanford University track and field has claimed another prize recruit from Niwot. Standout Taylor James has announced that she will be taking her prodigious talents to Palo Alto next fall, following the trail blazed by former Cougar standouts Elise Cranny and Mary Gillett. "In the end there were a couple of main things that swayed my decision," the talented senior said of her choice. "Obviously Stanford's athletic and academic prestige is one of the big ones. Also, Coach [J.J.] Clark seems...

  • Niwot boys capture second straight Class 4A state title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 21, 2020

Coming into the final 100 meters of the 2020 Class 4A state cross country race, Niwot junior Zane Bergen decided it was time to make his move. He was trailing leader Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos by a few steps, but he knew he had enough kick left to overtake the Green Mountain senior before the finish line. Unfortunately, the Green Mountain senior seemed to have other ideas. "I decided I'm going to go on the outside and get around him, but I guess I picked the wrong outside," Bergen said, describing the...

  • Prok leads Niwot girls to third straight cross country title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 21, 2020

Niwot head cross country coach Kelly Christensen knew that the lead pack in the 2020 girls Class 4A championship race would be fast, but both he and his runners were caught off-guard by the pace freshman Bethany Michalak of Air Academy set right from the start. That led to some tense moments for Christensen as he watched from the sidelines, adding and re-adding the potential final scores. "Our strategy all season was a lot different in workouts and races because we knew, or we were putting a...

  • Niwot captures regional cross country titles

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 14, 2020

There's not much country to be found in the grassy expanses of Denver's historic Washington Park, but, according to Niwot head coach Kelly Christensen, that's what made the 2020 Class 4A Region 3 cross country championships on Oct. 8 a "perfect" tune-up race for the Cougars as they prepare to defend their state titles next weekend. "Grass is slow, which is why I'm glad we were here," he said after his teams swept both the individual and team titles at the Oct. 8th regional. "We wanted them to...

  • Niwot sweeps team titles at Fairview Invitational

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 16, 2020

The Niwot varsity cross country teams looked formidable as they battled some friendly but fierce rivals at the Fairview Invitational on Sept. 12. Led by junior Zane Bergen in the boys race and freshman standout Mia Prok in the girls race, the Cougars claimed both team titles for the second consecutive weekend, and appear to be in great shape as they head into the most crucial weeks of the shortened 2020 season, according to head coach Kelly Christensen. "The kids are responding to the stress...

  • Niwot cross country aims for repeat state titles

    Jocelyn Rowley|Aug 26, 2020

Fifth-year Niwot head coach Kelly Christensen is grateful that the 2020 high school cross country season is proceeding, even if in a modified form, but he was also quick to acknowledge that, like everything else that it hasn't cancelled or postponed this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has made the sport more difficult for everyone involved. "It's everything, whether it's the schedule, trying to plan Covid practices, debating whether or not we're going to cut rosters, or finding races. I would say...

  • A clean sweep for Niwot

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 30, 2019

The Colorado state cross country meet has produced some amazing athletic achievements over the years, but few top Niwot's in the 2019 Class 4A championships, held Oct. 26 at the Norris-Penrose Center in Colorado Springs. Led by individual winners Samrawit Dishon and Cruz Culpepper, the Cougars emerged from a highly competitive field to capture both team titles and complete the first four-title sweep for a single school since 1995 (an honor Niwot shared with Lyons on the day). Afterwards,...

  • Dishon leads Niwot girls to second straight state title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 30, 2019

Niwot senior Samrawit Dishon was holding on to a slim lead heading into the toughest stretch of the state cross country race when she got a boost from an unexpected source-her closest competitors. "It was kind of cool to have them both there like that," Dishon said of Eagle Valley sisters Joslin and Samantha Blair, who trailed the front-runner by just a few meters. "They were hyping each other up and talking to each other, and I thought, 'This is great. I know they're not talking to me, but I'm...

  • Niwot boys claim first Class 4A state title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 30, 2019

There were plenty of emotions to go around after the Niwot boys' inspiring win at the 2019 Class 4A state cross country championships on Oct. 26, but one in particular seemed predominant among coaches, parents, and athletes alike, according to fourth-year head coach Kelly Christensen. "A huge relief is probably the best way to describe it," he said after the Cougars beat out 19 other teams to claim the top spot at the state race for the first time in school history. "It's validation for them....

  • Cross Country: Niwot dominates at Class 4A Region 3 championships

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 23, 2019

There wasn't much mystery about the team winner of the Class 4A Region 3 girls cross country race, after Niwot's top five runners crossed the finish line at Denver's City Park a good 30 seconds ahead of any other competitors. That resulted in a rare perfect score of 15 for the Cougars, which head coach Kelly Christensen feels is a good way to close out the 2019 regular season. "A perfect score is a perfect score, no matter where you get it or who you get it against or whatever the conditions,"...

  • Leading the Pack: Niwot Cross Country sets sights on Class 4A state titles

    Jocelyn Rowley|Aug 28, 2019

It will be no small task for the 2019 Niwot cross country program to top the success of last season, especially with the names Layla Roebke, Ares Reading, and Maggie Smith gracing college rosters this year. But that’s the expectation of fourth-year head coach Kelly Christensen, and the results from the Cougars’ season debut at the VistaNation 2Mile Invitational lend credence to his claims. With top finishers in four of the six races at the exclusive meet, Niwot seems to have more than eno...

  • Niwot girls take third at NXN Southwest

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 21, 2018

With barely time to catch their breath after winning the 2018 Class 4A state championship meet late last month, members of the Niwot girls cross country team traveled to Casa Grande, AZ, for the Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional on Nov. 17. Thousands of high school runners from teams in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah competed in the meet, one of eight regional qualifying events for the 15th annual Nike Cross National Championships coming up on Dec. 1 in Portland, Ore....
