The Niwot wrestling team witnessed history at the Frederick Warrior Invite on Jan. 14, and not just because of Tommy Stager. Last weekend’s meet featured seven girls-only brackets, making it the first girls-specific high school wrestling event in the state of Colorado. The Niwot High School softball team ended its season earlier than planned, missing the state playoffs by one spot in the rankings. Softball Head Coach Bobby Matthews knew this season would be challenging after losing eight seniors from the previous season, but was still hopeful for the young team he was putting together. In the Niwot softball team’s last week of regular season games, it ended with a solid win and a close loss. After coming off a big three-game winning streak, the Niwot High School softball team team continued with another victory against Centaurus but suffered a loss against Mountain View. After suffering a couple losses due an abundance of errors, the Niwot Cougar softball team came back strong this past week with multiple wins. Since the team’s losses against Longmont and Silver Creek, it won three games against Northridge, Thompson Valley and Greeley Central, some of them blowout victories. Students at Niwot High School have been enjoying a week of fun leading up to homecoming this weekend. Monday was Class Day for the assembly, freshmen wore white, sophomores wore black, juniors wore green, and seniors wore camo. Tuesday was Tie-Dye Day and Wednesday students wore pink. Thursday will be “Stocks, Crocs, and Socks,” and Friday is Mardi Gras day, the theme of Saturday’s dance. The Cougar softball team is working on strengthening a brand new team as it heads into its first games of the season. Last season, the Cougars ended with a 12-9 record and although they didn’t compete for a title in the state tournament, they had a strong team of heavy hitters. Tesone will teach business classes and serve as an assistant football coach. He spent many years teaching and coaching at Niwot before moving to Silver Creek for the past few years. TRACK Elise Cranny (Niwot), a junior at Stanford University, ran in the 1500 Meters at the 2016 Olympic Track and Field Team Trials, in Eugene, OR, July 7-8. For youngsters in the area, Niwot Youth Sports (NYS) has brought a lifetime of memories and experiences since its beginnings with recreational baseball in the late 1960’s.
