  • HS gymnastics places 4th at state championship meet

    Scott L. Malan|Nov 8, 2023

In the gymnastics world, just a fraction of a point can make the difference between ultimate success and shattered dreams. After the 4A state championships last weekend, the Niwot Cougars felt the disappointment of their sport's reality. As Niwot Coach Marisa Purcell predicted prior to Friday night's team competition at Thornton High School, the girls from Palmer Ridge High School would spring to their first state championship while just tenths of a point would separate the runners-up. After...

  • Niwot gymnasts win regionals

    Scott L. Malan|Nov 1, 2023

Mission accomplished. In a complete team effort, the Niwot High School girls gymnastics squad met this past week’s goal of winning their regional meet, which propels the Cougars into the 4A state championship meet Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, at Thornton High School. The Cougars scored 176.15 points to edge out Roosevelt’s 173.30 points behind all-around champion Maeve Flentie and individual apparatus winners Heidi Herbert (bars), Kylee Schlepp (vault) and Lilly O’Neill (beam). Juniors Flentie and Claire Vardas combined with O’Nei...

  • NHS girls gymnastics head to regionals

    Scott L. Malan|Oct 25, 2023

The Niwot High School girls gymnastics team has been looking for a lift to propel it into the 4A regional and state championship meets. The boost came this past week as the Cougars notched their highest team score of the season, a 178.1 tally, in the final Front Range League meet of the season at Mountain Range High School. "I think we're sitting really well. We obviously had a great League meet," Coach Marisa Purcell said. "But we started off a little rough on the beam. So, it definitely took...

  • Niwot High gymnastics showcase at Senior Night

    Scott L. Malan|Sep 27, 2023

In any sport, a bye week can be a curse or a blessing. If momentum is running high, a bye can be a buzz killer. But on the other hand, a week without competition can be a blessing when long weeks of practice and competition have taken a physical and mental toll. For the Niwot High School gymnastics team, this week's bye may be the blessing Coach Marisa Purcell and her team need. After hosting their final home meet of the season on Wednesday evening, Sept. 20, in an event that saw their top...

  • Niwot High's Night in New Orleans

    Camryn Bell|Sep 20, 2023

Niwot High School's annual homecoming festivities are a joy to both witness, and be a part of. This year's theme is "A Night in New Orleans," more commonly known as Mardi Gras. Niwot's student council team, sponsored by counselor Leah Messinger, has been working hard planning events, choosing spirit week activities, and more. Wednesday's spirit day theme is "Western Wednesday." Western-style hats are welcome and encouraged. Wednesday's activities are "Senior Night" and two sports events held at...

  • NHS girls gymnastics sweep

    Scott L. Malan|Sep 20, 2023

Coming off a sweep of the top five places in the all-around competition at a three-team meet this past week in Thornton, the Niwot High School girls gymnastics team appears ready to test the deeper waters of 4A state competition -- especially considering that two of their top gymnasts were less than 100% and did not finish among that top tier. Once again behind the stellar performance of junior Maeve Flentie, the Cougars continued their meet-to-meet improvement, finishing with 175.40 points, their highest team total in their three early season...

  • NHS gymnastics starts the season meeting all expectations

    Scott L. Malan|Sep 6, 2023

High school coaches know that the first event of any new season comes brimming with high expectations, high anxiety, and heightened nerves. How all that manifests for young athletes in the spotlight is part of the unknown thrill of opening night. “The first meet usually goes one of two ways,” Niwot High School gymnastics Coach Marisa Purcell explained. “When they come out, they have super high energy and they’re even more excited when you’re at home. So, either all that adrenaline is good and you go out and get a really high score or it’s like...

  • Niwot High School gymnastics young and strong

    Scott L. Malan|Aug 16, 2023

Niwot High School gymnastics Coach Marisa Purcell has seen some amazing Cougar teams in her now ninth year of leading the Cougars – 4A state championships in 2015 and 2018 and, more recently, top three finishes in each of the past three state meets. So, when she says she’s excited about this year’s edition, there’s probably plenty of good reasons. The Cougars are coming off a third-place state finish a year ago with a team made up of two sophomores and three freshmen, all of whom return for another shot at adding to the Niwot gymnast...

  • Great Scott! Niwot's Emerson Scott wins national tramp & tumbling championship

    Jack Carlough|Jul 5, 2023

Niwot resident Emerson Scott may be the perfect example of how one can accomplish more when enjoyment is prioritized over results. As the saying goes, work becomes play, and for Scott, his "play" resulted in a pair of national titles at the USA Gymnastics National Trampoline and Tumbling Championships in late June. Scott teamed up with Seattle's Toby Scott to win the open 22+ skill/age category synchronized trampoline before earning gold again in the individual trampoline event. The 22-year-old...

  • Five NHS Gymnasts make state finals

    Chris Teta|Jan 11, 2023

Now in her eighth year as Niwot High School girls' gymnastics coach, Marisa Purcell and her assistant coach, Maddi York, took a young squad to the 4A gymnastics state championships in Thornton where they finished third, but only seven tenths of a point from second place. After graduating six seniors in the spring of 2022, this team of mostly freshmen and sophomores had to first learn to be a team in a sport that traditionally emphasizes individual performances prior to entering high school. As...

  • Student Athlete of the Week: Nia Terrell

    Jack Carlough|Nov 23, 2022

The admiration gymnast Nia Terrell's teammates have for their senior leader is abundant. As Niwot High School entered its final event at the Class 4A team state gymnastics championships on Nov. 4, all anyone in green and white wanted to do was ensure that Terrell's prep career would end on a high note. Niwot was in the mix for a top-three finish and the Cougars just needed a strong performance on floor, Terrell's only event of the day, at host Thornton High School. Niwot delivered. Freshman...

  • Niwot gymnastics takes third at State, Kylee Schlepp wins individual title

    Jack Carlough|Nov 9, 2022

Considering her team's youth, Niwot High School head gymnastics coach Marisa Purcell was more than pleased with her Cougars following the final event of the Class 4A team state championships on Nov. 4. "They've worked so hard in trying to put it all together and it hasn't [come together] kind of all season," Purcell said. "So the fact that this whole meet overall has just come together [was great]." That hard work culminated in a total score of 176.525 and a third-place team finish at State - Pa...

  • Young NHS gymnasts keep improving

    Bruce Warren|Oct 19, 2022

The Niwot High gymnastics team may be short on experience, but it hasn't been an obstacle so far as the Cougars defeated Broomfield in a dual meet Oct. 12 by a score of 171.90 to 169.85. "We have a really young team," Head Coach Marisa Purcell said. We have two seniors, and one of them is injured. So we have mostly freshmen and sophomores." While Purcell was happy to win the dual meet, her focus is on Regionals, where the top three scores get averaged. She has about 10 athletes competing at the...

  • Young NHS gymnastics still finding their footing

    Patricia Logan|Sep 21, 2022

The team scores for Niwot High School gymnastics are trending down over the first few weeks of the season, but team chemistry is trending up, according to head coach Marisa Purcell who believes that is an important piece of her team's long-term success. Purcell was encouraged to see her gymnasts holding hands while they supported one of their teammates on the balance beam during last week's home meet against Rocky Mountain High School, a district team from Poudre Valley. "They were really in...

  • Talent and togetherness power young NHS gymnastics team

    Patricia Logan|Sep 7, 2022

Freshmen and sophomores led the Niwot Cougars to the first victory of the girls gymnastics season last week. Sophomore Maeve Flentie won all-around with a score of 35.00, sophomore Claire Vardas was second at 34.00 and freshman Kylee Schlepp finished third with 32.90 in the Class 4A meet against Ft. Morgan. • Student-Athlete of the Week-Madison Tajchman

    Jocelyn Rowley|Dec 8, 2021

The 2021-22 Niwot girls basketball team is on the path to redemption after posting just two wins during the prior two seasons. Helping lead them there is senior captain Madison Tajchman, a second-year varsity guard and natural leader, according to Cougars' new head coach Jon Hill. "Maddi represents our program and Niwot as a whole in a positive light, and is probably our biggest voice, along with Carly [Toothaker]," Hill said after a recent win. "She's an amazing student, on and off the floor....

CROSS COUNTRY Taylor James (Niwot) is on the Cross Country roster for Stanford University this fall, but has not officially competed for the Cardinal yet. Her Stanford biography notes that her grandmother, Jana Veverkova (200M, 4x100M), and grandfather, Zdenek Veverka (triple jump), are both Czech Republic track and field national record-holders. • Niwot rallies to finish second at Class 4A state championships

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 10, 2021

The Class 4A state gymnastics meet on Nov. 5 was full of memorable moments for Marisa Purcell and the Niwot gymnastics team, and there's at least one they'd like to forget. When it was all over at Thornton High, the Cougars came away with their best finish in the team competition since 2018, and an important lesson about sticking the landing. "There isn't anything they could have done differently," Purcell said. "They rocked the beam to end it, and to come out and stick five out of six, I'm...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Olivia Sroka

    Jack Carlough|Sep 15, 2021

Whether she's gliding down the snowy slopes of Winter Park or mastering the balance beams, Olivia Sroka does so with ease. The multi-talented athlete has reached impressive heights in both skiing and gymnastics throughout her life. Sroka, who plans on graduating from Silver Creek High School in December, began skiing at just four years old. While skiing for Winter Park, she soon specialized in the freestyle mogul where she placed 24th in nationals last year for the junior North American (NorAm)...

  • Niwot's Mia Curry sets sights on another Class 4A championship

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

Niwot gymnast Mia Curry admitted that winning a third straight Class 4A all-around title is in the "back of her mind," but there's another piece of hardware that she'd rather have at the end of her senior season: the 2021 team championship trophy. "Right now, my only goal is to help my team get the state win, because I think that would be the best way that I could finish my high school career," she said after Niwot's triangular meet against Fort Morgan and Lone Star on Sept. 8. "I just want to...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Halie Ostrom

    Jocelyn Rowley|Jun 9, 2021

Like Goldilocks, it took recent Niwot graduate Halie Ostrom a few tries before she found the sport that checked all the right boxes. "I did gymnastics until fifth grade, and then I did swimming until fifth grade too, and I think I played a little soccer," she recalled of her early athletic endeavors. "With swimming, the water was too cold, so I didn't really enjoy getting in and out of the pool all of the time. Gymnastics was just really expensive, and it took up a lot of time. It took like...

  • Curry shines as Niwot finishes takes third at state gymnastics

    Jocelyn Rowley|Apr 28, 2021

On April 24, the fast-paced 2021 gymnastics season wrapped up at the Class 4A state championships with a familiar name on top of the all-around standings. With top-five scores in each rotation, Niwot gymnast Mia Curry successfully defended her state all-around title, and led her team to third place overall in the process. Afterwards, Cougar head coach Marisa Purcell called the junior's performance "phenomenal," especially after such a challenging year. "She did a great job," Purcell said. "She...

Led by defending Class 4A all-around champion Mia Curry, Niwot gymnasts posted the top two scores in floor, bars, and beam and clinched two of the three top spots in the all-around standings. Afterwards, head coach Marisa Purcell said that the "little things" are coming together for the Cougars, but overcoming the long layoff continues to be a challenge....

  • Niwot gymnastics returns to the mat

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 24, 2021

Niwot head gymnastics coach Marisa Purcell was candid about how the 16-month layoff between the high school seasons had impacted the skills of her gymnasts. With gyms and recreation centers closed during lockdown periods, team members had difficulty getting training time on a consistent basis, and that could set back many of the gains she saw from her youthful team during the successful 2019 season. "We just haven't had a lot of places to go," she said. "That's been the hardest part, not...

  • Niwot's Mia Curry wins Class 4A state gymnastics all-around title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 13, 2019

Niwot gymnast Mia Curry started preparing months in advance for the 2019 Class 4A state all-around competition, but she wasn't prepared for the flood of emotions after hearing that all of her hard work had paid off. "I'm just...super happy," the stunned sophomore said moments after the announcement of her first-place finish in the individual all-around at this year's gymnastics championships, held at Thornton High School on Nov. 8. "I'm just so happy and proud of my entire team, and myself, and...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Mia Curry

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 13, 2019

It may have lacked the life-and-death drama of Captain Ahab's pursuit of Moby Dick across the ocean, but Mia Curry's quest to add a Tsukahara vault to her routine and qualify for the state all-around competition may have been as single-minded. Luckily, the affable 10th-grader also escaped Ahab's watery fate, and instead earned a trip to the top of the Class 4A gymnastics podium. "Last year, I only did three events at state, and I wanted to come out here doing all-around, but I didn't want to do...

    Jocelyn Rowley|Nov 6, 2019

"We've done a lot more individual varsity practices this year, to help them build confidence in each other and learn to lean on one another, and for them to come together and have expectations in each other," the...

  • Familiar Face - Sue Prahl

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 30, 2019
    1

It's 6 p.m. on a Friday night in late October, and the unseasonably warm afternoon is quickly giving way to an autumnal chill as the sun slips behind Longs Peak to the west. At Everly Montgomery Field in Longmont, Niwot High Game Manager Sue Prahl grips her handheld radio as she scans the grounds, looking for the game's officials, or "black and whites," as she calls them, due to their striped uniforms. There's still an hour to go before kickoff in the upcoming football game between Niwot and...

  • Student-athlete of the Week: Nikki Sims

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 16, 2019

The Niwot softball team is headed back to the playoffs after a thrilling 2019 season that saw dramatic wins and heartbreaking losses, often in the same week. It also featured plenty of Niwot offense, as the team averaged more than 10 runs per game and recorded the highest batting average (.386) in the Northern League. Driving that offense for the Cougars was lead-off hitter Nikki Sims, who took her production to a new level during the regular season, with career-highs in average (.521), on base...

  • Student-athlete of the Week: Cole Toothaker

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 9, 2019

It's been a whirlwind fall for second-year drum major Cole Toothaker and the Cougar marching band, but a scary moment over the summer almost had the talented musician and natural leader watching it all from the sidelines. "I was on a rafting trip in Idaho, and I did a backflip on the beach-I have a gymnastics background and do flips a lot," he recalled. "But I landed on an incline, and put my hands down to break my fall, and ended up breaking both of my wrists, which was a little inconvenient."...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Liam Flanagan

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 11, 2019

Niwot running back Liam Flanagan made a splash in the Cougars’ season opener against George Washington, rushing for a career-best 210 yards and three touchdowns. And that game was no fluke. In 2018, he rushed for more than 100 yards three times, and was indisputably Niwot’s offensive leader. While Flanagan is quick to give credit for his productivity to the offensive line and his coaches, it turns out that he also has some specialized training in his background that has paid off in une...

  • New faces grace Niwot gymnastics roster in 2019

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 11, 2019

The Niwot gymnastics program isn’t exactly starting from scratch this season, but after graduation and other pursuits lured away much of last year’s varsity roster, fourth-year head coach Marisa Purcell knew that picking up where the team left off after winning the 2018 state title was an unlikely scenario. Instead, she is looking forward to molding a new generation of Niwot gymnasts into state champions, even if she has to be patient in the meantime. “It’s very exciting to have a new team an...

  • Gabe Amaya – Familiar Face

    Vicky Dorvee|Aug 28, 2019

There’s just nothing like the anticipation of opening a package, so everyone loves it when the big brown truck stops in front of their house. UPS driver Gabe Amaya is Niwot’s main guy in the brown uniform driving that brown truck. The Courier wanted more than just a friendly wave “hello” from the reliable person who makes hundreds of stops around town. So we asked Amaya some questions and learned that his ties to the town run deeper than his daily route. Left Hand Valley Courier (LHVC) Gabe Amay...

  • Niwot senior to serve as Boulder County Fair Queen

    Jocelyn Rowley|Aug 7, 2019

What it lacks in air-conditioned palaces and fancy formal dinners, the year-long reign of the county fair queen more than makes up for in dusty arenas and long trips to distant horse shows. But Amber Nusser, the newly crowned 2020 Boulder County Fair Livestock Show Rodeo Queen, wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s a lot of work, and a lot of hours, but I love it,” Nusser said after an appearance with her horse Miley during the 150th annual Boulder County Fair on Aug. 4. “It’s so unique to h...

  • Niwot athletics sends six more to the next level

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Jun 12, 2019

Editor’s note: Part I of this story can be found here. A memorable year for Niwot athletics turned into a memorable Letter of Intent signing day on May 22, as 12 athletes crowded onto the auditorium stage to make an official commitment to competing at the next level. Caleb Churchill, West Point Gymnast Caleb Churchill didn’t have a conventional high school athletic career, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t impressive. In his senior year alone, Churchill took second All-Around in the Colorad...

  • Student-athlete of the Week: Erica Bortfeldt

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 1, 2019

The quadrennial summer Olympic Games brings millions of new athletes to gymnastics, and after the U.S. team’s dramatic finish in the 2008 Beijing games, one of those was then-elementary school student Erica Bortfeldt. Bortfeldt’s affinity for the sport has endured, and now, more than a decade later, the Niwot High senior competes for a club team based at Airborne Gymnastics in Longmont. On April 20, she captured the All-Around title in her division at the 2019 NCAA Youth Gymnastics Cha...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Kristi Vu

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Jan 25, 2019

Niwot senior Kristi Vu became a swimmer by accident. Literally. “I started swimming as physical therapy for gymnastics,” she said. “And I just started to love it more and more. I finally quit gymnastics two years ago, because swimming was so much more fun.” ‘Fun’ is a word that Vu uses liberally to describe her time with the Niwot swim team. For example, she said it’s the main reason she’s specialized in sprints, in particular the 50-yard freestyle. “It’s just a fun race to swim,” she said. “I...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Bitzy Archibald

    Jocelyn Rowley|Jan 18, 2019

It would be easier to list the team sports that Niwot power forward Bitzy Archibald hasn’t tried at some point in her life, but the senior said she’s really a “pretty big nerd” at heart. “I think people picture a jock, but I’m always reading in the locker room,” she said. Archibald is a fan of sci-fi and thrillers, and recently completed “We Know It Was You” by Maggie Thrash. “I get a lot of jokes about that from the team.” What isn’t getting any jokes is Archibald’s play on the basketball court...

  • Niwot girls claim silver at Class 4A track & field championships

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 23, 2018

Neither rain, nor cold, nor Valor Christian could dampen the spirits of junior Maggie Smith and the Niwot girls 4x400M relay team on the gloomy final day of the 2018 Class 4A State track & field meet, held May 17-19 at Jeffco Stadium. With a time of 3 minutes, 55.64 seconds, Smith, Erika Timbang, Kelia Portis, and freshman Taylor James cruised to the state title in the mile relay, beating Valor by more than 1.5 seconds, and putting a bow on a impressive weekend that saw the Niwot girls score...

  • Gymnast Churchill looks to build on early season success

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Mar 2, 2018

Niwot junior Caleb Churchill doesn’t remember a time when gymnastics wasn’t an important part of his life. As the son of a long-time gymnastics coach, Churchill has been in training ever since he could stand on his own. “When I learned to walk, my mom started doing classes for me,” Churchill said. “I started learning the basics then, and when I was in kindergarten, I started competing.” His mom, Kenzie, is the head coach at Cats Gymnastics in Boulder. Now in his tenth competitive season, the...

  • Chohon leads Niwot to 2nd at State

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Nov 11, 2017

With 176.75 team points, Niwot captured second place overall at last weekend’s Class 4A State gymnastics meet at Thornton H.S. Despite leading after their first two rotations (floor and vault), the Cougars fell just shy of beating Anastasia Buzalsky and the Elizabeth Cardinals (179.15), who took home their fourth state title since 2009. Buzalsky took the top individual honors with high scores in all but one of the rotations. Niwot gymnast Lindsay Chohon took second in the All-Around c...
