  • Niwot improves to 3-0 after tough non-conference wins

    Jocelyn Rowley, Sports@lhvc.com|Sep 6, 2017

The Niwot boys soccer team passed an early season test with back-to-back wins over top-ranked teams Holy Family (0-1) and Standley Lake (0-2-1). With the wins, the Cougars moved to 3-0 on the season to enjoy sole possession of first place in the Northern League. In the match against Holy Family on Aug. 31, the Cougars’ front was once again aggressive on the attack out of the gate. Holy Family’s defense, led by Abel Campos, managed to fend them off until the 17th minute when Niwot senior Jas...

  • Niwot tops Skyview 3-1 in season opener

    Jocelyn Rowley, Editorial@lhvc.com|Aug 30, 2017

The Niwot boys soccer team cleared the first hurdle on its path to the post season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Skyview Wolverines in their season debut Aug. 24. Niwot was aggressive on the attack out of the gate, and kept the ball in the Skyview third for most of the first half. The front three generated several scoring chances for the Cougars, and finally got on the board when junior forward Manual Tapia punched in a centering pass from senior wing Andres Montealegre in the 20th...

  • Dimit expects Niwot to contend for title

    Jocelyn Rowley, Sports@lhvc.com|Aug 18, 2017

It’s only a mild exaggeration to say that not much got past the defense of the 2016 Niwot boys soccer team. Led by keeper Mario Munoz, the Cougars allowed just 17 goals in 16 games, the second lowest total in the Northern League and eighth lowest in Class 4A. On the other side of the ball it was a different story. The Cougars managed just 31 goals, and their inability to convert on scoring chances turned a potentially special season into merely a good one. Five of their seven losses last season...

The performance earned him the freshman of the year award. His first goal for Penn State was named the NCAA’s No. 1 Play of the Week on Oct. 23, 2015, coming agains...

  • Boys soccer: Niwot falls to Evergreen in first round of playoffs

    Jocelyn Rowley, Sports@lhvc.com|Nov 7, 2016

For 110 minutes last Wednesday, keeper Mario Munoz and the Niwot defense did what they’ve been doing all season—holding opponents scoreless. Unfortunately for the defense, however, the Cougars’ offense also did what it’s been doing all season—not converting on scoring chances. And so it would go for Niwot’s first round playoff game against the Evergreen Cougars, last year’s 4A state champs. Niwot’s defense did its job, but scoring, or, more precisely, a lack thereof, would ultimately prov...

  • Boys Soccer: Niwot drops close game to Silver Creek

    Jocelyn Rowley, Sports@lhvc.com|Oct 26, 2016

On Oct. 11, the Niwot boys soccer team faced off against rival Silver Creek in a key Northern League matchup. Going into the contest, the Raptors, who hold the Northern League’s top spot, were averaging more than 3 goals per game on 11 shots. Despite holding Silver Creek to just a single goal, by senior Miguel Toledo, his sixth of the season, Niwot was unable to find the back of the net, losing 1-0, for the fifth time this season. In fact, each Niwot loss in 2016 has been a 1-0 contest. The C...

Niwot’s scoring came from junior Jason Rodriguez, who scored two goals, and junior Dylan Campbell, who had one goal. “Every game we’ve had this season has been a close game,” Head Coach Stephen Dimit said. “It seems like every game is just coming down to the wire. As the summer comes to a close, kids, parents and teachers alike look forward to the new school year ahead. This year, students returning to Niwot High School (NHS) can expect new technology in the classroom, as well as updates throughout the school. Eric Rauschkolb, who is going into his third year as the principal of NHS, said the most exciting thing he’s looking forward to this year is the rollout of new iPads for all students. The teachers have been preparing for the new technology since last year by receiving their own Mac laptops and i...

  • Niwot girls soccer loses in first round to D'Evelyn

    Thorn Compton, Sports@lhvc.com|May 18, 2016

Returning to the playoffs after missing the tournament last year, the Niwot High School girls soccer team played a tough game but ultimately lost to D’Evelyn 4-1 last Wednesday. Despite the loss, the girls still gave the season everything they had and should be proud of the 10-6 record for the season. Niwot Head Coach Rob Johnson reiterated that statement after the loss, saying this loss was more on the coaches than the player’s effort. “These girls worked so hard and as coaches it’s our job to...
