    Going into their game against the Holy Family Tigers (3-1), Cougars head coach Preston Hardy knew his team was facing an uphill battle. “We will have our hands full,” he remarked prior to the game. “They are one of the best 4A programs in the state.” Unfortunately for the Cougar faithful, the Tigers did their best to prove Hardy correct, cruising to a 70-40 victory over Niwot last Tuesday night.   • Local Irish dance student advances to nationals

    Third-grader Nuala Dougherty has been working hard, and it’s paying off. The eight-year-old recently took fourth place in the regional competition for Traditional Irish Dancing wearing her dress that was custom-made in Belfast, Northern Ireland. “I pretty much love it because it’s fun,” Nuala said. “And there are a lot of cool steps.   • Quiet Zones are Coming

    A public meeting facilitated by officials of the Boulder County transportation department was held Dec. 7 in a packed room at Niwot Elementary School. The meeting aimed to gather community input about the county’s continuing Quiet Zones’ efforts, and to further explain the project costs and timelines.   • Lefthand Canyon Drive to close temporarily

    According to Boulder County Transportation, there will be a culvert installation at Glendale Gulch (approximately seven miles up the canyon from US 36). The department will have a closure on Monday, Dec. 19 and Tuesday, Dec. 20 to set a crane to install the culverts. The road will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to noon and 12:15 to 4:30 p.m. both days.     Unable to overcome a scoreless first quarter, the Niwot girls dropped their Dec. 5 road opener to the Mead Mavericks, 47-39. The loss moves the Cougars to 1-2 on the season, with three games left before the winter break. The Mavericks jumped out of the gate quickly, scoring an easy field goal on their first possession.     The Niwot girls swimming team kicked off the 2016-17 season by taking the third-place medal at the Valley Viking Invitational, held Dec. 2-3 at Gilcrest High School. Earning 211 team points, the Cougars had top five finishers in seven of the meet’s 12 events, including three of the top five spots in the 100 freestyle.
