  • Local resident compiles a history of Niwot restaurants

    Deborah Cameron|Oct 27, 2021

Remember when Niwot Tavern used to be Flanagan's Pub? Or when Pinnochio's used to be Treppeda's? Or when 1914 House used to be Reverend Taylors? Though some may not realize it, Niwot has always been home to a large number of high-quality, diverse restaurants. Recently, local resident Laura Bloom has started to document the progression of one establishment to another beginning as far back as the 19th century. Bloom is keeping her history on a website, Serving Boulder, which she created in 2010....

  • Operation Gratitude wants your Halloween candy

    Deborah Cameron|Oct 27, 2021

Children can bring home an enormous amount of candy after trick or treating on Halloween. Not only can it be more of a load than they can carry easily -- that much candy isn't healthy. Now anyone who is looking to save calories and keep that candy from hanging around for weeks, has an option for putting it to use. Operation Gratitude is Niwot's Halloween Candy give-back program. Extra candy can be dropped off between November 1st and November 6th at the DRF Realtors Office behind the Old Oak Cof...

  • Theft on 2nd Avenue

    Bruce Warren|Oct 27, 2021

Liz Gould, proprietor of boutique shop Little Bird on 2nd Avenue in Niwot, reported the theft of several large rings from the store's jewelry display case last week. The rings were displayed on a rolled velvet bar that held six or seven rings. "They were all on one display, so someone just picked it up and walked away with it," Gould said. "They were sizes 10 to 12, which usually fit men. We have no idea who did this. Our jewelry cases have been open for the last two years since it is so much...

A special thanks to Courier reader Jean LoPorto for sending this spectacular photo of an equally spectacular fall day in Niwot....

  • Fall clean-up at Niwot parks

    Bruce Warren|Oct 27, 2021

Volunteers from Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Niwot came out on a brisk fall Saturday morning Oct. 23 to clean up the Niwot Children's Park after a busy summer. The crew, young and old, picked up apples from the ground, trash and tumbleweeds, and gathered up a few lost items as well. A few trees were trimmed, and a new load of wood chips delivered on Friday was spread around the play structures. The crew (l to r): Suzanne Johnson, Nathan Brix, Nora Swedberg, Anna Swedberg, Brett Swedberg,...

  • Halloween mythconceptions

Carol OMeara, Colorado State University Extension Boulder County|Oct 27, 2021

Halloween horrors aren't always connected to the spirits of the dead, even though the ancient holiday is. Some of the spookiest creatures on the planet are products of human imagination trying to explain the workings of Mother Nature, or using Mother Nature to nefarious ends. A quick look at the history of some myths and misconceptions shines a light on frightful tales. The legendary witch hunts of Salem in 1692 may have root in a fungus, Ergot (Claviceps purpura), which invades rye and other gr...

  • Amendment 78 would transfer power of custodial funds to legislature

    Hannah Stewart|Oct 27, 2021

Every year, the state of Colorado receives money–custodial funds–from the federal government, settlement dollars from lawsuits and through gifts and grants. These funds are generally set aside to fund particular legislative programs, for example, emergency wildfire or COVID funds. These monies are currently handled by the state treasurer and individual agencies who oversee the disbursement to various programs. However, Amendment 78 seeks to change this model and instead have all custodial funds go through the state legislature. The ame...

  • Honoring those who have served

    Special to the Courier|Oct 27, 2021

As Veterans Day 2021 approaches, the Niwot Community Association is once again honoring the local men and women who have served their country in the U.S. Armed Forces through the Veterans Banner Project. Earlier this month, nearly 50 full-color banners featuring the names, photographs, branch, and service years of military members past and present with local connections were installed along 2nd Avenue and in Cottonwood Square where they will hang through Veterans Day. Behind each of these...

  • Arts Student of the Week-Mina O'Dell

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

Growing up, Mina O'Dell loved to copy the colorful cartoon characters she watched on T.V., and, over the years, that turned into a passion for painting and drawing. Now as a sophomore at Niwot, she is exploring a new medium that is challenging her perspectives. "I really like sculpting because it's so much different from drawing and painting," she said. "Because with a drawing, you can only see one point of view of the art that you're making. Whereas with sculpting, you can really put detail...

  • Niwot runs over Mountain View for long-awaited win

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

The 2021 season won't be remembered as the best in Niwot football history, but on Oct. 22 the Cougars made it the most successful in more than a decade. Behind a balanced performance in all three phases of the game, Niwot put down Mountain View 28-20 to deliver its fourth win of the season, the most since 2008. For Cougar second-year head coach Nik Blume, finally breaking the three-win curse is both a relief and another sign that the program is finally turning around. "[Niwot athletic director]...

  • Niwot boys soccer ties Skyline in regular season finale; playoffs loom

    Jack Carlough|Oct 27, 2021

When Niwot and Skyline get together in boys soccer, a close game typically follows. That proved true once again on Oct. 22 when the two teams settled on a 1-1 draw. Niwot will now enter the 4A state playoffs as the No. 19 seed and will face No. 14 Regis Groff in Denver on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. It will mark the third consecutive season these schools have met in the playoffs-the Cougars beat the Fusion 2-1 in last season's quarterfinals matchup in April. Regis Groff finished 9-6 this year an...

  • Prok leads Niwot to perfect finish at cross country regionals

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

Not much is perfect in life, but at least two things at the 2021 Class 4A Region 3 cross country championships on Oct. 22 were: the mild autumn weather, and the Niwot girls' final score in the team standings. Paced by sophomore Mia Prok with a time of 17 minutes 29 seconds, the Cougars took the first seven spots on the leaderboard, earning just 15 points, the lowest total possible. "I think we were all just excited to run here and have as many in the top as we could," Prok said following the...

  • Niwot boys claim third straight regional title

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

The results weren't quite as perfect for Niwot in the boys' race, but with six runners in the top 10, it was a title-winning performance nonetheless. Behind defending Class 4A champion Zane Bergen in first place, the Cougars scored just 22 points, more than 30 ahead of second place Centaurus (56), and 64 ahead of third-place Denver South (84). With the win, Niwot captured the Class 4A Region 3 crown for the third year ini a row, and will now move on to try for a third consecutive state title....

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Eva Klingbeil

    Jocelyn Rowley|Oct 27, 2021

In September 2020, Niwot distance runner Eva Klingbeil was on the cusp of a breakout season when she suffered an injury that ended her racing year prematurely. For the first time since joining the varsity as a freshman, she would be on the sidelines for the Class 4A regional and state championships, instead of helping Niwot win the titles. That was "really hard," Klingbeil acknowledged, so she was determined not to let history repeat itself during her senior season. "I definitely have gotten a...

  • Letter to the Editor (Oct. 27)

    Oct 27, 2021

To the editor: Thank you for the article about the city of Boulder LDAC. I agree that the residents of unincorporated Boulder County should financially support the public libraries they use. For the thirty years we have lived in Niwot we have enjoyed and been helped by the Longmont Public Library. I heard that Longmont has also talked about forming a library district. It is logical that Niwot would be included in Longmont’s district since we are served by the St Vrain Valley School District. I would like to be taxed to support the Longmont l...

  • Community Pet Spotlight (George and Janice, Oct. 27)

    Oct 27, 2021

Meet George and Janice These very good feline friends would enjoy being adopted into their new home together and are available at a 2-for-1 price. While we do not believe that George and Janice are truly bonded, at 10-years-old they have cohabitated for several years and going home together would be ideal. If George and Janice are adopted separately, they are required to go to a home with another cat. Both kitties would like to find a home with children that are high school aged or older. To...
