  • Bootstrap Brewing wins GABF Gold

    Deborah Cameron|Sep 15, 2021

Niwot-born Bootstrap Brewing has once again medaled at this year's Great American Beer Festival awards. The brewery received a gold medal for Stick's Pale Ale, a win which placed it among 20 other GABF gold, silver, and bronze medal winners in Colorado. Although the festival portion of this year's event was canceled due to pandemic-related concerns, the awards portion of the ceremony proceeded in person. Brewers, many of whom were already in town for the Craft Brewers Conference, carefully...

  • Boulder County looking for volunteer youth mentors

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 15, 2021

Thirteen years ago, Boulder County saw a gap in its service to its younger residents. The Integrated Managed Partnership for Adolescent and Child Community Treatment (IMPACT) director at the time was instrumental in establishing the county's youth mentoring program; IMPACT works to assist youth (from 0 to 18-years-old) to match them with intervention services when needed. Since establishing the program, hundreds of youths throughout the county have been matched with adults, who have gone...

Any NCA member can bring two free trash loads, with additional loads costing $25 each; non-members will pay $40 a load. Loads equal a standard size pickup truck at bed level. • Niwot's bookstores hold readings that support kids' emotional wellness

    Deborah Cameron|Sep 15, 2021

A pair of bookstore readings this past weekend supported the mental health of some of Niwot's youngest residents. Both readings were less of a traditional presentation and more hands on, which worked out well for attendees. On Saturday Sept. 11, the Wandering Jellyfish on Second Avenue hosted a reading by Jessica Speer, author of the book "BFF or NRF (Not Really Friends): A Girl's Guide to Happy Friendships" which is available for purchase at the store. The reading started with Speer helping...

  • The apple, harbinger of autumn

Deryn Davidson, University Extension Boulder County|Sep 15, 2021

Along with all the garden bounty that comes this time of year is one of my favorites, the apple. It is a crop that has deep roots here along the Front Range. Young and mature apple trees can be found in backyards, along old ditches, and in managed orchards. Apple orchards took off in the area in the late 1800s and for a time there was a thriving industry here. While those days are gone and the industry has largely moved to the Northwest (Washington state is the largest apple growing region in...

  • CU Boulder hosts annual scholarship-fundraising bicycle race

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 15, 2021

Early on the morning of Sept. 12, cyclists flocked to the University of Colorado, Boulder to participate in the Buffalo Bicycle Classic (BBC). In years past, the BBC saw approximately 1,200 riders; in light of COVID, there was a virtual race and a decrease in numbers for the in-person 2020 event. However, this year, co-organizer Jenny Anderson was proud to announce that there were 1,100 riders participating in nine different routes. So, whether participants were seasoned cyclists or so-called...

  • 2nd annual St. Vrain for the Brain coming Sept. 18

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

As a senior in Niwot High's IB program last year, Mackenzie Demmel created St. Vrain for the Brain, a virtual 5K run/walk that raised nearly $4,000 for brain tumor research. Now the fun run is back for a second year, but this time you can get in on the action with family, friends and fellow runners on a course that starts at the high school. While that meant more work for Demmel in 2021, it's all worth it to raise more money for a cause that is near and dear to her heart, she said. "I'm just...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Olivia Sroka

    Jack Carlough|Sep 15, 2021

Whether she's gliding down the snowy slopes of Winter Park or mastering the balance beams, Olivia Sroka does so with ease. The multi-talented athlete has reached impressive heights in both skiing and gymnastics throughout her life. Sroka, who plans on graduating from Silver Creek High School in December, began skiing at just four years old. While skiing for Winter Park, she soon specialized in the freestyle mogul where she placed 24th in nationals last year for the junior North American (NorAm)...

  • Niwot bats come alive at Berthoud Invitational

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

Behind sophomore Anne Booth and her 10 RBIs, Niwot won three out of four games at the Berthoud Invitational softball tournament, held Sept. 10-11 in Loveland. With the wins, Niwot improved to 7-7 on the year, with nine games left in the 2021 season. The tournament got off to an inauspicious start for the Cougars on Friday, as they struggled to score runs against Windsor, despite amassing 10 hits, resulting in an 11-4 loss. Booth was responsible for two of those, and senior Ayva McComas also had...

  • Niwot's Mia Curry sets sights on another Class 4A championship

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

Niwot gymnast Mia Curry admitted that winning a third straight Class 4A all-around title is in the "back of her mind," but there's another piece of hardware that she'd rather have at the end of her senior season: the 2021 team championship trophy. "Right now, my only goal is to help my team get the state win, because I think that would be the best way that I could finish my high school career," she said after Niwot's triangular meet against Fort Morgan and Lone Star on Sept. 8. "I just want to...

  • Niwot holds on to beat #3 Thompson Valley

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

It was a night of big kills, big digs, and even bigger comebacks as #5 ranked Niwot took on #3 Thompson Valley in an edge-of-your-seat thriller that spanned five back-and-forth sets. Behind UNC-bound senior Zoey Gibbs, the Cougars overcame 5+-point deficits at least three times, including in the decisive fifth set to take the match. Afterwards, fifth-year head coach Daisha Agho was quick to credit an unsung part of the team for its role in the hard-fought win. "I can't even tell you how proud I...

  • Lackluster Niwot thumped by Eagle Valley

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 15, 2021

Niwot's Sept. 11 matchup against Eagle Valley (2-0) got off to a thrilling start for the home fans, with a foiled onside kick attempt, a long run by quarterback Ben Classen, and finally, a 1-yard touchdown run by Thomas Carnagie, all within the first minute of play. But neither the thrill nor the lead would last, as Eagle Valley scored just three plays into their first possession to tie the game. The Demons then scored a touchdown on the possession after that, and the one after that, and then...
