    Vicky Dorvee|Sep 1, 2021

Sometimes you just have the music in you, and other times you just wanna get the music in you. Either way, the annual RISE Benefit Concert in Niwot will help satiate music lovers of all ages. The very danceable event returns Saturday, Sept. 11, for the fourth year following an obligatory COVID skip in 2020. This year the event will be held at Whistle Stop Park in Niwot at the corner of 1st Avenue and Murray Street, after the 2019 event was held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. RISE stands for...

  • Jazz finds a new champion in Niwot

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 1, 2021

Many Niwotians know Keith Waters as the co-owner of Inkberry Books, along with longtime partner Gene Hayworth. But underneath that mild mannered exterior lies the syncopated heart of a jazz connoisseur, who brings more than his fandom to the form. Now Waters is bringing the versatile genre back to town with the Niwot Jazz Festival, an all-day showcase of local, regional, and national talent, slated for Sept. 4. "Gene and I have now been part of the community for about three years, and it just...

  • Niwot honors bees and their advocate - Tom Theobald

    Hannah Stewart|Sep 1, 2021

On Saturday, Aug. 28, the Niwot community celebrated bees for their contribution to our world--without them, flowers would have fewer pollinators and we certainly wouldn't have honey without them. In recognition of bees, the Niwot Business Association and event champions Deborah Read Fowler and Victoria Keen hosted the Honey Bee Harvest Festival. The celebration included a panel of speakers throughout the day, live music, family activities and more, all throughout Niwot. Niwot resident Jerry...

  • Letter to the Editor (Sep. 1)

    Sep 1, 2021

To the editor: During our first visit to NIWOT my 82-year-old husband took a walk to the local market, sat down with a cup of coffee and worked on his Sudoku. Beside him was a group of young teens all eager to talk about school. Suddenly it went quiet and as he proceeded to leave, they gathered around him to APOLOGIZE!! for being so noisy, and not giving him the space and quiet and, proceeded to gift him with a muffin. WHAT AN IMPRESSION Niwot had on him. Bravo to the parents who raised these thoughtful teens. Says a lot about your community!...

  • Altona Grange Hall fundraising to match grant for exterior renovation project

    Kristen Arendt|Sep 1, 2021

The Altona Grange Hall sits on a little over an acre on the corner of Nelson Road and North 39th Street. From its hilltop vantage point, visitors to this historic site can enjoy views that stretch all the way to the Flatirons on a clear day. Yet few people may know the history of this unassuming, tidy building - or be aware that the 126-year-old structure is due for a facelift to restore its exterior to its 1895 origins. This facelift is the latest project in a restoration effort that began in...

  • Yesteryear Farm show draws appreciative crowds

    Deborah Cameron|Sep 1, 2021

Who says that the past has to be confined to the pages of a book? Last weekend, history was on a field and in attendees' living memories. After a year-long hiatus due to COVID-19, Longmont's Dougherty Museum held the Yesteryear Farm Show. Judging by the packed parking lot and early morning crowds, the community welcomed the return of the three-day event. Katherine Eskridhe from Broomfield was there with her young daughter Jo. "My dad is friends with the Doughertys who own the museum and we've...

  • Young spellers test their pollinator knowledge

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 1, 2021

Inkberry Books was buzzing with excitement as Niwot's best spellers swarmed to the inaugural Harvest Festival spelling bee on Aug. 28. The competition was friendly, but fierce as local students in three age groups showed off their impressive vocabulary skills, while vying for an Inkberry gift certificate. By day's end, three new champions were crowned, and everyone learned a little bit more about pollinators along the way. First up was the six to eight-year- old group with the day's most...

  • Honey Bee Harvest Festival brings mead to Niwot

    Deborah Cameron|Sep 1, 2021

Though Niwot can lay claim to fame as the original home of major craft brewing talent, a different beverage, mead, had its chance to shine during last weekend's Honey Bee Harvest Festival. Bartenders at The Wheel House served it to crowds of customers throughout Saturday afternoon. Drinkers could choose from three mead varieties and eight mead-based cocktails, all featuring offerings from Boulder-based Redstone Meadery. The tasting spectrum for mead samples ranged from lighter to more intense an...

  • Stout defense bestows win in Niwot's season opener

    Jack Carlough|Sep 1, 2021

Games are often won or lost in the red zone and that proved true in Niwot football's season opener at Greeley Central on Aug. 27. The Cougar defense didn't budge much all night to secure the team's first win, 21-14. With less than two minutes remaining in the game and Greeley Central down a touchdown, senior Craig Wright intercepted a Wildcat pass to put the game on ice. Wright's statement play was a fitting end to a defensive masterpiece. "Defense comes down to guts -- no guts no glory on the...

  • Niwot volleyball impressive in season-opening win

    Jocelyn Rowley|Sep 1, 2021

Before the 2021 volleyball season began, fifth-year head coach Daisha Agho wasn't sure if she was more excited about the veterans returning to the varsity lineup, or the impressive newcomers, who do more than just fill holes left after graduation. As it turned out, players from both groups came up big for the Cougars in a stirring season-opening victory over Class 4A runner-up Mead, and Agho is now even more excited for what's to come for the rest of 2021. "We were excited to get to see some...

Playing NCAA Division I college volleyball has long been a dream for Niwot senior Zoe Gibbs and, after three impressive seasons as a varsity middle for the Cougars, one clearly within her reach.
