  • PAC 12 golf tournament cut short

    Jesse Murphy, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

This year’s PAC-12 men’s golf conference championship was held at Boulder Country Club over the weekend. Rain and then about four inches of snow held up Saturday’s rounds, and leftover snow on Sunday morning made for even more delays. But the golfers were able to play 54 holes, meeting the criteria of 36 for an NCAA-sanctioned event. Bob Webster — who belongs to the club and serves on the board of directors, along with acting as governor of the Colorado Golf Association — said that hosting t...

  • Niwot bats make a statement against Longmont

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

The Niwot baseball team snapped its five-game losing streak Thursday, April 27, with a convincing 11-1 road victory over crosstown rival Longmont. In a gaudy show of offense, the team went 14-for-30 at the plate with five extra-base hits. Nine Cougars hit safely on the day, including sophomore infielder Joey DesEnfants, who had his first multi-hit game since March. For head coach Craig McBride, it’s always good to beat the rival Trojans, even when there’s not much at stake. “It was nice going...

  • Niwot outlasts Northridge to capture Northern League title

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

Ahead of last Thursday’s match against the league-leading Northridge Grizzlies, Niwot midfielder Charlotte McCarthy knew that the stakes were high for the Cougars. With a victory over the Grizzlies, Niwot would be in a position to win the Northern League outright for the first time in nearly a decade, automatically earning a berth to the Class 4A playoffs. A loss to the Grizzlies, on the other hand, would muddy the playoff picture considerably. “We’re extremely excited about North...

  • Solem takes eighth at Estes Park Invitational

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

Niwot girls golf coach Ed Weaver was uncharacteristically subdued about his young team’s performance at a pair of non-league tournaments last week. “We did…okay,” said Weaver, clearly choosing his words carefully. “We continue to get experience that’s going to be valuable for us.” On April 24, Niwot joined 19 other teams, including Class 5A state contenders Colorado Academy and Cherry Creek, at the par-70 Ranch Country Club in Westminster for the Willie DiLoretto Invite. Facing both a challe...

  • Niwot Girls take 1st at Stutler Bowl Twilight Invitational

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

It was business as usual for the Niwot girls track team at the Stutler Bowl Twilight Invitational, held April 24 at Cherry Creek High School. Against a talented field comprised of several of Colorado’s top-ranked Class 4A and 5A squads, the Niwot girls scored 98.7 points on the day to edge out Rocky Mountain (96) for the team title. It was also business as usual for Niwot junior Mary Gillett, who finished the day with multiple individual titles, including the 100-meter dash (12.38 seconds), t...

  • Silver Creek swimmers enter homestretch

    Jeremy Jaeger, [email protected]|May 3, 2017

The Silver Creek boys swim team is closing in on the finish of the 2017 season. This last week saw the Raptors swimming in the Mountain View Lions 2017 Last Chance Invitational, Silver Creek’s third and final non-conference, multi-team invitational meet of the spring. Silver Creek, which includes swimmers from both Silver Creek and Niwot High, finished seventh out of the 10 teams in the meet. Divers Benjamin Willett and Ashton Hubert continued their strong recent showings, placing 11th and 12th, respectively. The Raptors’ two top pla...

  • Student-Athlete of the Week: Elizabeth Elton

    Special to the Courier|May 3, 2017

Niwot High School senior Elizabeth Elton is not only a 4.0 IB student (4.4 GPA weighted) and a speech captain for the Forensics team. She also competes in weightlifting and Cross-Fit competitions. Though she has yet to turn 18, she moved into the women’s 18-35 division for the Cross-Fit Open this year, as she will reach that age before the regional competition. As a forensics captain, “I teach forensics members about the different events and coach them on speeches,” she explained. Elton compe...
