  • Girls Golf: Solem shoots 85 at Northern League Event #6

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Apr 26, 2017

“If it’s breezy, hit it easy.” That was Niwot head golf coach Ed Weaver’s advice to his players at the windy Centaurus Invitational, held last Wednesday at Indian Peaks golf course in Lafayette. With gusts topping 35 mph, Weaver feared that his young golfers might have trouble adjusting their swings to accommodate the blustery conditions. Luckily, he needn’t have worried. Led by freshman Julia Solem’s career-best 85, the Cougars placed third overall in the Northern League’s sixth event, behind...

  • Girls Soccer: Niwot rolls to three more wins

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Apr 26, 2017

Led by Maddie Barkow and Kailee Stobbe, the Niwot girls soccer team outscored its opponents 16-3 in three games last week, including a convincing 4-2 win over the high-scoring Erie Tigers (8-4) and a 10-0 rout of the Greeley Central Wildcats (1-10), which saw eleven Cougars tally a point. For head coach Stephen Dimit, though, the game of the week was the Cougars’ narrow 2-1 win over crosstown rival Longmont, a team far more competitive than a 2-10 record suggests. “Any time we can get a win over...

  • Baseball: Niwot drops two to Thompson Valley

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Apr 26, 2017

It was déjà vu all over again last Saturday against Thompson Valley, as the Niwot baseball team took another hard-earned lead into the seventh inning only to see it slip away, bit by agonizing bit. Not even heroics from standout shortstop Skye Messinger could save the day, as Niwot pitchers allowed five hits and a walk in the bottom of the seventh to hand league foe Thompson Valley an 8-7 walk-off victory. For head coach Craig McBride, the Eagles’ late game comeback was just one more ind...

    Bruce Warren, [email protected]|Apr 26, 2017

Rosemary Morrissey is looking forward to getting back on her mountain bike this summer to get back in training for cyclo-cross competition. Morrissey, a sophomore at Niwot High School, finished seventh at USA Cycling Nationals in Hartford, CN, January 8th in the Women’s Junior 15-16 division, after winning the Colorado state title. Cyclo-cross combines cross-country running with biking, Morrissey explained, comparing it to a steeplechase. “The races usually last 40 minutes,” she said. “You...

  • Girls tennis team cruises home

    Jeremy jaeger, [email protected]|Apr 26, 2017

The Niwot girls tennis team wrapped up its regular season without hardly breaking a sweat in the final two matches, going 7-0 against Northridge on Monday, April 17 and running the table again vs. Greeley Central, 7-0, on Wednesday April 19. Against Northridge the Cougars didn’t lose a set; the day’s closest match was a 6-2, 6-2 victory at number one doubles by understudy duo Jewel Ng and Sreeya Kairamkonda, both of whom have stepped up and ably filled roster spots vacated due to injuries and...
