  • Gunbarrel's Beyond the Mountain Brewing begins distribution

    Deborah Cameron|Mar 17, 2021

This month, Gunbarrel-based Beyond the Mountain Brewing announced that it will begin distributing to liquor stores throughout Boulder County. This was a major step for the business, which first opened in late December 2017 at 6035 Longbow Drive. "We're pretty excited and we think the cans are looking great," said the brewery's managing member, Chuck Hixon. He shared that as a local craft brewer, owners are prioritizing distribution in Longmont, Niwot, and Boulder. While the business currently...

  • DRF Real Estate earns B Corporation status

    Deborah Cameron|Mar 17, 2021

5 is getting off to a good start for one Niwot business. DRF Real Estate, LLC, has been certified as a B Corporation, an ambitious designation that recognizes a business's commitment to the planet and to the community. Similar to a "fair trade coffee" designation, the recognition doesn't bring direct benefits to a business, but it allows customers to know more about a company's values and approach to its operations. It also makes the business part of a regional and global community of other...

  • Better late than never? Snowpocalypse 2021 makes up for lost time

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 17, 2021

On March 13, many of us went to bed feeling a little sheepish about buying into the hype of winter storm Xylia, which local forecasters had teased all week with predictions of improbable snow totals and comparisons to the memorable blizzard of March 2003. Store shelves had been cleared, events were rescheduled, and we looked forward to engaging in treasured snow-day traditions. But after a few false starts on Saturday afternoon, it appeared that Xylia was destined to be a bust. By all...

  • Where's the snow? ... Oh, there it is

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Mar 17, 2021

On Saturday March 13, like the old Burger King commercial, everyone was asking where's the snow. We all found out the next day. Fifteen or so inches of heavy wet spring snow fell in Gunbarrel and Niwot. Besides testing the flexibility of trees and bushes, the snow also brought a short power outage to Gunbarrel Estates....

  • Niwot Historical Society presents 2021's first lecture

    Vicky Dorvee|Mar 17, 2021

Railroad historian Larry Dorsey will open this year's Niwot Historical Society lectures series with a presentation highlighting the advent of the railroad and its impact on Colorado's history. The lecture is titled In the Footsteps of the Iron Horse – The Influence of the Railroad on Colorado History. The term Iron Horse refers to steam locomotives which came on the scene in the 1800s gradually replacing actual horses which had been the prominent means of transportation. Dorsey, a long-time r...

    Patricia Logan|Mar 17, 2021

Repairs on the Cottontail Trail in Gunbarrel could begin this week, causing a temporary closure to two sections of the trail. The trail is part of the LOBO Trail. Impacted sections are between Lookout Road and Highway 52. Starting as early as Wednesday, a half-mile section of the trail south of Highway 52 to the Boulder White Rock Ditch will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. while work is being done. Resurfacing is expected to take four weeks. The section of the trail that is directly south of...

  • Opinion: CU community must face a reckoning from Hill riot

    Ben Berman|Mar 17, 2021

On Saturday, March 6, Boulder saw its first crack of warm weather for the season. As the sunny weekend day progressed, thousands of my peers from the University of Colorado flocked to the Hill neighborhood for an impromptu party. By the time the sun went down, that soon turned into a riot, complete with smashed cars, injuries and, as is typical in the times of COVID-19, lethal potential for a superspreader event. What would have been, in normal times, a day likely filled with innocent outdoor recreation, was instead a hotbed for an irresponsibl...

  • Senior Meriem Krarti re-ignites passion through CAS

    Hannah Stewart|Mar 17, 2021

As an already-established volunteer at Longmont United Hospital, when it came time to think about CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) projects to fulfill International Baccalaureate requirements, Niwot Senior Meriem Krarti already knew what to do. "I like helping people and I knew the volunteer coordinator at the Longmont United Hospital," explained Krarti. The service element of CAS was in the bag for her, and to a lesser extent, so was creativity--Krarti has always been interested in creative...

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 17, 2021

Niwot senior Autumn Baldwin is a talented trumpet player in the school's advanced jazz and symphonic bands, and also a member of the chamber singers choir group. Lately, she has also turned her talents to composing and songwriting, and has contributed to "several performance pieces," according to Niwot music director Wade Hendricks. "The once-shy underclassman has become a terrific senior leader and role model for younger students in the NHS band program," he said. "She is not shy about grabbing...

  • Codevilla leads Niwot to third place at Class 4A championships

    Jocelyn Rowley|Mar 17, 2021

The Niwot swim and dive team didn't claim the top prize at the 2021 Class 4A championships on March 12, but neither did they come home empty-handed. Four Cougars turned in medal winning individual performances on the day, and junior Mary Codevilla even made history with a record-setting time in the 500-yard freestyle. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite enough to overcome Heritage and Mullen in the team standings, and Niwot ended falling just short of its ultimate goal. Afterwards, first-year...

  • One last race and a lot of great memories for talented Niwot High skier

    Patricia Logan|Mar 17, 2021

It wasn't the final run that Niwot High School senior Emily Creek dreamed of, but she's grateful she got to be part of a team and go to the state championships all four years of her high school career. Creek raced for Nederland High School and was in second place in slalom after her first run at Loveland Ski Area on Friday. But on her second run she went over a gate and had to stop and hike back up to get back on course. She still finished in 19th place. "My nerves get to me at state, and I...

Pending a possible snow cancellation, the Cougars will return to the pitch on March 18, 499 days after losing to Golden in the second round of the 2019 4A playoffs. Several impact players from that 2019 team will give it another shot in 2021. Fifth-year head coach Stephen Dimit will enjoy nine seniors on his 23-man roster including Aidan Martin, Keegan Stobbe, Ismael Domingu...
