  • Cougars lose big to Northridge, but bounce back against Greeley Central

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

Niwot boys basketball Coach Preston Hardy knew his team faced an uphill climb on the road against the Northridge Grizzlies last Tuesday night. “They are good, real good,” he said ahead of last week’s matchup. But following the Cougars’ 76-48 loss to the Grizzlies, he became convinced that Northridge is a state championship contender. “They are by far the best team that we’ve played,” he said. “Their seniors have been playing varsity since their sophomore year, and that experience is r...

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

At the Thornton Invitational last weekend, Niwot senior Tommy Stager won a 9-5 decision over Rangeview’s Deron Solomon in the 145-pound championship match to capture his fifth consecutive tournament title. Stager’s record improved to 33-2 on the season, and he remains first in Tim Yount’s On the Mat rankings for the 4A 145-pound division. Stager’s 28 team points propelled his team to a 14th place finish (out of 21). Junior Jose Lopez (285 pounds) lost to Parker North-Wanner of Florence in the...

  • Vandalism at Niwot Children's Park

    Jeremy Jaeger, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

The Niwot Children’s Park has apparently been vandalized, according to a posting from Jan. 24 on the Niwot Children’s Park Facebook page. One of the park’s most notable and unique features are the small, custom-crafted, painted stone creatures—such as bats, insects, frogs, and lizards that inhabit the area—in various locations on the play structures and other elements throughout the park. Several of these stone animals have been severely damaged or destroyed, some appearing to have been chis...

  • Cougars fall to Windsor in final dual of the year

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

The Niwot girls swim team wrapped up the regular season with a non-conference dual against the Windsor Wizards, the last competition before the Northern Conference meet on Feb. 3-4. While most teams are taking a break ahead of the league event, Niwot Coach Sarah Stamp wanted to give her girls one more chance to drop their times. “Windsor is a really good, super-fast team,” she said ahead of the matchup. “The coach and I added this meet to our schedules so our girls who are still on the borde...

  • Beanies for babies at BCH

    Jeremy Jaeger, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

If you or someone you know gave birth at Boulder Community Hospital in the last year or so, there’s a good chance that newborn left the hospital wearing a hat knitted by longtime Niwot resident Hallie Pasko. It started, said Pasko, as she was “trying to figure out what to do with leftover bits of yarn,” the remains from other, larger knitting projects. Pasko knew the standard policy at BCH is to send newborn infants home with a free beanie, and she quickly put two and two together. Once she g...

  • Cougars cruise by Northridge, but get tripped up by Greeley Central

    Jocelyn Rowley, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

From the outside looking in, it’s been a tough stretch for the Niwot girls basketball team. Winners of just two of the last five games, the short-handed Cougars have struggled to keep key veterans such as Mary Gillett and Y.Y. Chen out of foul trouble and on the court in the late going. With just seven full-time varsity players on the roster, Niwot’s lack of depth has become a factor. But head coach Terri Ward doesn’t think it’s time to hit the panic button yet. “There’s not a team in the leag...

  • The eagles have landed: High numbers of bald eagles seen at Lagerman Reservoir

    Jeremy Jaeger, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

Lagerman Reservoir is a little-known gem of the Boulder County Parks and Open Space system. Well, at least that’s the case for the human residents of Boulder County. It’s a different story for the local and migratory bird communities, and for one bird in particular. This winter bald eagles have turned Lagerman Reservoir into their local stomping ground. Bald eagles are a well-known success story of the environmental and nature conservation movements. By the mid-20th century the national eag...

  • Jazz Goes to Niwot Elementary

    Jennifer Simms, [email protected]|Feb 3, 2017

“Jazz music is our gift from America to the world,” musician Tony Gulizia told an audience of fifth graders at Niwot Elementary School during an assembly on January 27, which was sponsored by the Niwot-based Colorado Jazz Group. Primarily known for organizing Niwot’s Jazz on Second Avenue festival, Colorado Jazz Group, the non-profit jazz advocacy organization, has launched a new partnership with the award-winning Vail Colorado based Jazz Goes to School program to bring jazz education to front range elementary schools. “We want to reach a...
