    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Sep 6, 2018

The 2018 season of Rock & Rails closed out with two terrific groups. The concert opened with Summerland Sun to start the evening off, while the incomparable Hazel Miller had the audience up and dancing for the last two hours. Comments from attendees ranged from “Wonderful,” and “Fantastic,” to “I can’t believe my ears.” Thanks to everyone who contributed to the tip jar. Proceeds, which went to Whistle Stop Park for planned improvements, including a small building to house the beverage bar,...

  • Fabulous Face packs ‘em in

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Aug 23, 2018

As expected, the a cappella group Face drew an enthusiastic crowd at the Aug. 16 Rock & Rails concert. The group, which has its origins in Boulder, can always be counted on to bring out music lovers. The concert also brought out the hungry and thirsty, with food trucks doing a bang up business. The beer tent had its second biggest night in sales. Best of all was the record-breaking tip jar, with over $1,700 going to the Niwot Historical Society to support its lecture series. Only two concerts...

Beaders had a chance to try their hands at making a bracelet on Saturday, July 21. The class was held at Pebble Art Jewelry to mark the store’s fourth anniversary. Owner Kate Head sponsored the event, which offered food, wine, music and a chance to create some wearable art. “It’s been an honor to be a part of the Niwot community,” Head said. Located next to the Niwot Market, Head added that she also likes being part of the market....

  • Water treatment plant goes green

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jun 29, 2018

If you’ve driven past the intersection of 63rd Street and Hwy.119, you’ve probably noticed the solar array by the Reservoir Water Treatment Plant (RWTP). According to Meghan Wilson, City of Boulder communication manager, the array helps the city meet its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030. The RWTP was the second largest energy user for all of the city’s facilities. The panels will supply two-thirds of the treatment plant’s energy needs. Wilson said, “We are aiming fo...

  • Hail summer

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jun 28, 2018

If you’ve lived in Colorado long enough, you know that on any given day it can rain, hail, snow and/or either freeze or boil you to death. Monday and Tuesday, June 18 and 19 were just such days. From stripped tomato plants and trees to landscaping and flowers laid bare, Niwot and Gunbarrel were clobbered with marble, quarter and golf ball-sized hail. Here are a few photos of love’s labor lost as well as those of you who believe when life hands you a hail storm, go sledding. Unfortunately, whe...

  • Editorial: Tariffs and unintended consequences

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|May 23, 2018

…In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. Benjamin Franklin – 1789 There is one thing I’ve learned in life – everything has a consequence. But it’s the unintended consequences that often catch us by surprise. Tariffs have been in the news lately. Simply put, (thank you Google) a tariff is “a tax or duty to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports.” Tariffs are said to protect jobs and goods. If a tariff is placed on materials coming into the country, those materials, either finished or unfinished, w...

  • Gunbarrel church and school work together

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|May 11, 2018

Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church has been a mainstay in the Gunbarrel neighborhood since 1974. Today, Pastor Janet Kettering is making sure that the church’s role in the community continues. A former court reporter in Minnesota, Kettering has been a Lutheran pastor for nine years and began her ministry at Shepherd of the Hills in November 2016. Kettering is carrying on the church’s long-held mission set by its first pastor, Glenn Lundahl, that the church belongs to the community. “We certai...

  • Williams family to develop Mockingbird at Fabulous Gunbarrel Green

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jan 18, 2018

Longtime Gunbarrel residents will remember the Mockingbird restaurant on Lookout Road. While many have fond memories of eating there, the restaurant closed and, after a fire, the building was demolished in 2007. A new foundation was created for a multi-use development, but the 2008 recession put those plans on hold. That hold is now over. A new effort, spearheaded by brother and sister Thysson and Gemma Williams, is underway for a multi-use development, to be known as Mockingbird at Fabulous...

  • 71st Street Shoulder Project plans generally well received

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 15, 2017

According to Boulder County Transportation’s Andrew Barth, the majority of those attending the Dec. 4, 71st Street Shoulders Project open house “were strongly in favor of all aspects of construction.” While the new alignment of 71st Street to Highway 52 was well received, many who left comments requested installing a traffic signal at the intersection. Barth responded by saying, “…area is controlled by CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) so we cannot accommodate {that request} at this time.” CDOT has been informed of the request. Ba...

  • 71st Street improvements on tap for 2019

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 7, 2017

Gunbarrel residents were able to get a first look and make comments about preliminary plans for changes to 71st Street at an open house, held at Emerson-Micro Motions in Gunbarrel on Dec. 4. Many in attendance felt that the changes were necessary. Lindsey Killion who lives in The Lookout said, “I think it’s a good idea that the county try something here because there are a lot of people who use this stretch, whether biking or walking. It’s kind of a dangerous scenario at this point.” Theodor...

  • Lookout and Spine Roads get makeover

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Oct 28, 2017

Anyone who has tried to navigate Lookout Road or Spine Road knows about the traffic delays caused by street reconstruction. According to the City of Boulder website, street reconstruction included removing the existing pavement and sub-grade. The roadway is then reconstructed with six to eight inches of new asphalt. Traffic delays up to 15 minutes have been the norm. The project ran from Sept. 26 to Oct. 20. Anybody traveling on 71st Street in Gunbarrel knows that it needs repair too. According...

  • Proving Einstein

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

On Oct 16, LIGO announced its observatories were able to detect gravitational waves created by the collision of two neutron stars. The collision occurred on Aug. 17. The collision, known as a kilonova and similar to a supernova, simultaneously generated electromagnetic waves (light and gamma rays) and a gravitational wave, both travelling at the speed of light. LIGO detected the gravitational wave, while other observatories detected the electromagnetic wave. The collision also produced heavy metals, such as gold, silver, lead and uranium....

  • Gunbarrel’s HDP makes waves with Nobel Prize winners

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Oct 27, 2017

In an unassuming building in Gunbarrel lies a hidden gem, High Precision Devices, Inc. HPD has been in the headlines recently, because its seismic isolation platform was an integral part of the experiment that won the 2017 Nobel Prize in physics. The prize was awarded to three physicists, Drs. Rainer, Weiss Barry Barish and Kip Thorne, for the detection of a gravitational wave that was generated by a collision of two black holes over one billion years ago. Einstein predicted the existence of...

  • Life Lessons

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jul 21, 2017

For Niwot High School grad Libby White (06) being physically active is an integral part of life. Courier readers may remember her as a Cougar softball pitcher who went on to play at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. But being active also had a physical benefit in terms of managing her juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and ultimately, in her decision to become a physical therapist. Diagnosed with juvenile RA at age 10, White said having been exposed to health care professionals as a kid...

  • Clean-up days in Gunbarrel Estates

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jun 17, 2017

June 10 and 11 saw residents of Gunbarrel Estates recycling electronics, offering free “treasures” and throwing away unwanted items. Cindy Maynard and David Vincent of WK Real Estate sponsored the June 10 electronics recycling. “We do the electronics drive ourselves every summer,” Vincent said. “We pay for the truck and everybody is welcome to bring whatever they like.” Both live Gunbarrel Estates. “It’s a nice opportunity to give back to the neighborhood,” Vincent said. Maynard and Vincent have been sponsoring the event for eight years. R2 S...

  • May snow brings arbor woes

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|May 25, 2017

The heavy, wet snow on Thursday, May 18 played havoc with many Gunbarrel area trees. David-Michael and Glenda Monasch lost a tree in a manner they can only describe as being “explosive.” “Glenda saw one of the bigger branches starting to quiver,” David-Michael said. “She called me. We were looking out of the windows. Before we could go out and shake any of the branches, right there and then, in seconds, ‘boosh!’” “The whole tree exploded, all at once,” Glenda said. “Not one branch came down...

  • Artist paints for Niwot Market

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|May 14, 2017

Walk into Niwot Market and you’ll see artist Tom Studholme hard at work. Studholme, who created a mural in the store, has been commissioned by Bert Steele to do a painting honoring a cousin of his children, Jay Knaus. Steele said the painting has a lot of meaning for him. “It is a tribute to Jay Knaus, who passed away last year. He was a very good football player. He played for Longmont High School. He [had] many concussions as a player.” The painting, which shows Knaus catching a footb...

  • Reflections from Mary

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Apr 21, 2017

When we first started the Courier I had the distinct impression that we were like one of those 1940s Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney movies, where the kids put on a show in a barn and then decide to take it to Broadway. We were seven people with diverse backgrounds – a lawyer, an architect, a paralegal, a photographer, a teacher, a banker and a FDA investigator. Not quite the butcher, baker and candlestick maker, but close. Our main goal was to highlight the academic and athletic accomplishments of area students that the two local dailies t...

  • It's A Laughing Matter: I'd Dress For Success But I've Nothing To Wear

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Jan 6, 2017

I’m going to teach the fashion industry a lesson. I’m going naked. No, I’m not protesting the slaughter of innocent polyesters. I want to give fashion designers an object lesson in reality. Make clothes that real people can wear or else… Women’s fashion can be a mystery and it starts in early childhood. Clothing categories are labeled as infants, toddlers and little girls with sizes marked in either months, “T”s or regular numbers. For the most part the kids’ age matches the number of the size. But if you are a girl, you eventually hit...

  • The sign says it all

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 30, 2016

Don’t leave your holiday waste for others to clean up. While some of the material pictured is recyclable, the corrugated boxes need to be broken down and placed in the bins. These bins are for single-stream processing. According to the Boulder County recycling website, single-stream recycling “means all recyclable containers and recyclable paper materials are combined in one bin.” For hard to recycle items, CHaRM (Center for Hard or Recycle Materials) accepts electronics, scrap metal, mattr...

  • ShopGirl is on the move

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 24, 2016

If you’re looking for something stylish at a great price, you need to visit ShopGirl consignment store at its new location in Cottonwood Shopping Center. The consignment store moved in to the space formerly occupied by Sugar Beet Station on Dec. 12. Owner Rita Williamson said she opened the original shop in the walkway between Cottonwood and the Niwot Market on April, 15. “We moved to get a better location,” Williamson said. The new location also has a bit more space, and great natural light...

  • It's A Laughing Matter: Competitive Parenting

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 24, 2016

Ok ladies, we’re back. I want to thank you for tuning into the first interactive radio broadcast for Super Uber/Competitive Parenting. Not that any of us have to worry, because in the world of parenting, my audience is always at the top of the parenting food chain. I have to say that I did find some inspiration in an article I found while perusing USA Today as I was also making some killer stock trades. According to an interview super uber/competitive parent and self described “Alpha Mom” Constance Van Flandern, “I’m at my Alpha-Mom...

  • Proto's opens in Gunbarrel

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Dec 10, 2016

Pizza lovers rejoice. Proto’s Pizzeria Napoletana opened in the Gunbarrel Center on Wednesday, Nov. 30. According to owner Pam Proto, “It’s been a long time coming. Proto’s is located at 5378 Gunbarrel Center Court, suite 1, Boulder. Hours are Sun...

  • It's A Laughing Matter - The Catalogs Are Coming, The Catalogs Are Coming

    Mary Wolbach Lopert|Dec 2, 2016

When God said, “Be fruitful and multiply,” He was talking about human beings, not holiday catalogs. I gave up counting the daily arrivals. It is easier to weigh them. Each day since September our mailbox is stuffed with three or four pounds of catalogs. It started innocently enough when we moved into our house. My children were small, we moved in January, and I knew no one in the neighborhood. Under those conditions, daily mail delivery takes on great significance. I happened to be by the mailbox one afternoon when our mail lady arrived. Bes...

  • What are those things?

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Aug 19, 2016

There’s an odd, green triangle-shaped “thing” dangling from the large ash tree by the northwest corner by the intersection of 79th Street and Hwy. 52. A closer look shows a purple one higher up in the tree. No, it’s not a late Mardi Gras celebration. Both are prism-shaped traps designed to catch the emerald ash borer (EAB), which has infested Boulder County ash trees. According to the website Sinochemical.com, these three-sided sticky traps are designed to catch EABs. The different colors...

  • W is for wildlife

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Aug 7, 2016

More than a hundred people from the Twin Lakes Action Group and the Boulder Neighborhood Alliance gathered to form a “’W’ for Wildlife” on the Twin Lakes north field. The purpose of the demonstration was to show support for the Twin Lakes' herons, coyotes, eagles, and birds such as the lazuli bunting, plus other diverse wildlife, and to help keep the character of unique neighborhoods in Boulder. Both groups object to what is believed to be the unprecedented action of “annexation through o...

  • It's a laughing matter - I have a wand and I know how to use it

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jul 31, 2016

I am not a princess. Really - despite any rumors you’ve heard to the contrary. My problem is that I’m just not a handy person. I don’t sew, decoupage, scrapbook, paint, refurbish or do crafts. Oh sure, when I was young, during the holiday season, my mother and I would make little things. One year I remember making a kaleidoscope, which consisted of a decal gingerly placed at the bottom of a baby food jar with some glitter. Hey, it was the mid 1950s - that was as high tech as it got. When thing...

  • TLAG's big concern

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Jul 28, 2016

Twin Lakes Action Group (TLAG) has more on its plate than concerns about housing density on what has been Boulder County Parks and Open Space vacant land. With the county in talks to annex the land to the City of Boulder, TLAG is concerned that annexing county open space to the city will be the gateway to annexing other Gunbarrel neighborhoods, without those county residents’ consent. These were the sentiments expressed by Jeff Cohen and Rolf Munson, both TLAG board members. Cohen, an attorney in Gunbarrel, said the issue is, “The way the [City...

  • Lively Little Lending Library

    Mary Wolbach Lopert, [email protected]|Feb 28, 2016

Warm February weather brought out book-lover Beverly Clark. Clark said she enjoys picking books for her grandson from Niwot’s Little Free Library at the corner of 79th Street and Niwot Road. “I love using these [libraries], because you can leave a book and take a book,” Clark said. “I make sure I always bring a book… because if everyone always took a book, the library would be empty. I use these all the time. They are great.” Clark’s reading selection for her grandson included “Real Stories of the Ghosts of the White House” and — she said wi...
