Boulder Country Day School To Open New Campus by Helen Johnson On Tuesday, September 7, Boulder Country Day School will begin the 1999-2000 school year on its spacious new 5.5 acre campus in the Twin Lakes Technological Park in Gunbarrel. The 290 students enrolled range from pre-schoolers to seventh graders. The eighth grade level will be added next year. Classes have no more that 16 students, enabling each student to get individual attention. Principal Doyle Kersey said, "The square footage of the new buildings totals 46,000 square feet, compared to the 15,000 square feet of the previous building on Kalmia Avenue." There are five separate buildings. The main building houses the library, art room, foreign language room, and computer and science labs on the first floor, with the administrative offices on the second floor. The preschool has its own building, as does the middle school. Kindergarten through fifth grade occupies a two-story building, with two classes in each grade. The 3,000 square foot gymnasium, stage and two music rooms occupy their own building, providing separation for noisier activities. All buildings will be ready for students by opening day. The elementary school playground was designed by the architectural firm of Leathers and Associates, a company that specializes in community built playscapes. Boulder Country Day students and adults had a hand in the design, so their playground will be unique. Volunteers will erect the playground between October 20 and 24. "Parents donate so much of their time to the school, it’s amazing," Kersey said. "We have committees for everything from child care to equipment. Parent volunteers spent many hours researching and setting up the school’s new library." Boulder Country Day is a private, non-profit school, which utilizes the Carden Method of education. The Carden Curriculum stresses a phonics-based approach to language arts. The academically challenging environment features strong programs in math and science. Music, art, drama, French and Latin are also required subjects. Instruction is carried out in a stimulating and joyful environment. According to Kersey, "Carden schools provide basic education in an effective, pleasant, purposeful atmosphere. The Carden philosophy is to assist each child in mastering thoroughly all the basic skills in language arts, mathematics, work habits, and physical stamina. Each child can then go on creatively and successfully in whatever lifelong endeavors they choose." There are a limited number of openings for fall 1999, in second, sixth and seventh grades and in the preschool. For more information call 303-527-4931. |
