Prestige Printing - A Family Affair By Laura Whildin
When you walk into Prestige Printing in Gunbarrel, you will be greeted by a retired Greyhound, a cat named Murphy and the friendly husband and wife team of Lou and Nancy Tatti. The business has a personable, family feel. Several large printers hum in the background while three dedicated employees complete the pressing orders. Lou and Nancy bought Prestige Printing in 1992. The shop specializes in small business printing such as color brochures, letterheads, business cards, posters and envelopes. Lou describes the business as "a real ma and pop shop." He also emphasizes their desire to have as much personal contact with their customers as possible. According to Lou, "The business is a combination of commercial printing, which is high end color printing done for corporations or graphic artists, and quick printing for franchises." They can provide small business customers with 90 percent of their printing needs. The Tattis try to provide "a close working relationship with their customers," by helping them design products that fit their needs and are cost effective. "We look at work that’s coming in when we start doing bids with our customers, and see if there are additional steps which are adding cost to a project but not any value." Lou met Nancy while they were both in nursing school. Lou then worked for a pharmaceutical business for 25 years. He became interested in printing while managing the pharmaceutical company’s in-house print shop. Nancy retired from her job as a registered nurse to join the company in 1998. They have three children. Each child has worked in the business at some time. Their daughter Angela worked at Prestige Printing until 1998 when the Tattis acquired the Horizon Graphics and Type Co. in Boulder, which Angela now runs. The Tattis are proud of their family’s involvement and love working together. According to Nancy, they complement each other because Lou handles the business and financial decisions, while she enjoys customer service. The Tattis moved the business to Gunbarrel in 1996 after they lost their Boulder lease. Being long time Gunbarrel residents, they feel the move has been positive because they have been able to gain customers in Gunbarrel, Louisville, Lafayette and Longmont while still keeping up with their Boulder clientele. Prestige Printing ships all over the country and provides free pick-up and delivery to businesses in Boulder County. When asked what they most enjoyed about their work, Lou said his favorite thing is delivering orders. "People are anxious to see you." For Nancy, it is "working with the public to provide a quality product." While there are some down sides to owning a business, like collecting outstanding bills and some of the everyday office routine, as they do all their own accounting and cleaning, both say enthusiastically that they have fun and the day passes quickly.
