Banners Unveiled At Community Meet-Up
By Mandy Walker

  Banners
Attendees at the June 12 Niwot Community meeting at the Left Hand Grange Hall got a sneak preview of decorative banners that are now in place in Cottonwood Square and along Second Avenue.

The brightly colored banners feature a cottonwood tree, which is a unifying symbol for the Niwot community. The banners resulted from the combined efforts of Harris Faberman of Freeman Myre, property managers for Cottonwood Square, and George Keeler, owner of La Cavasita.

Rachel Snyder of NiwotCentral said phase two of the project would be printing photos from the Niwot Historical Society’s archives on additional banners and matching the banners with the historic locations represented in the photos. <Read More...>

A Taxing Issue

Home Improvement
By Donna Currie

If you’re remodeling your house, or even just sprucing it up a bit, you might want to keep an eye on what your improvements will do when it comes time to sell your home. If you never plan on moving, you can be as quirky as you want to, but if you’re thinking of selling, take a moment to consider what home buyers might think of that paper mache waterfall diorama stuck to the basement wall. <Read More...>

Left Hand Laurel - Selene Hall
By J. Svendsen Delaney

Santa Fe’s Gift to Niwot

Selene HallWhether Selene Hall is playing with her granddaughter, managing the Niwot branch of the Bank of the West or sweeping up after Nostalgia Day, you can be sure she does it whole-heartedly. As this month’s Left Hand Laurel, Hall is a central figure in Niwot.

Chances are you’ve already crossed paths with her while she’s flipping pancakes at a local fundraiser. By virtue of being Bank of the West manager and serving on myriad town and county boards as well as volunteering in almost every capacity possible in the Niwot community, Hall has developed a wide network of friends who respect her and rely on her constant presence and down-to-earth perspective.

As one of six owners of the Left Hand Valley Courier, Hall was initially dismayed when presented with the honor, arguing that owners should be exempt, but her objections were overruled by the broader community. <Read More... >

A Bittersweet Taste Of Honey
By Donna Currie

Bees have been in the news lately. Some reports say that whole colonies are dying in what has been dubbed “colony collapse,” while swarms are annoying residents by being in the wrong places. Tom Theobald of Niwot Honey Farm said that colony collapse isn’t a new thing. “My take on this is that we’ve known about the problems for many years, but they haven’t been addressed.” According to Theobald, “This has been a steep decline.” As many as 60 percent of the managed colonies in Colorado were lost between 1990 and 2000. <Read More...>

Boulder County Land Use staff has been working on a conceptual draft of an expanded Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) program, which includes thresholds for structural size. “The purpose of the draft is to get a dialogue going,” said Michelle Krezek, spokesperson for Land Use. “This is not a staff recommendation.” Krezek expects many more meetings before the program is finalized. <Read More...>
